<distribution-code display="yes">II</distribution-code><congress>119th CONGRESS</congress><session>2d Session</session><legis-num>S. 5264</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES</current-chamber><action><action-date date="20260805">August 5, 2026</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="S259">Mr. Reed</sponsor> (for himself and <cosponsor name-id="S399">Mr. Hawley</cosponsor>) introduced the following bill; which was read twice and referred to the <committee-name committee-id="SSBK00">Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>A BILL</legis-type><official-title>To amend title 49, United States Code, to set requirements for certain operator workstations for fixed route buses, and for other purposes.</official-title></form><legis-body style="OLC" display-enacting-clause="yes-display-enacting-clause" id="H490D6380B23D4B82AA315A367C95A9C6"><section section-type="section-one" id="H89B639D147744B06B105F047C0F8AC68"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Bus Operator Safety and Security Act</short-title></quote>.</text></section><section section-type="subsequent-section" id="H2A3C0A1CE6F04830976137AA2188DE68"><enum>2.</enum><header>Public transportation safety program</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">Section 5329 of title 49, United States Code, is amended—</text><paragraph id="H681931280C06403EB44A863403DD4F43"><enum>(1)</enum><text>by redesignating subsections (f) through (k) as subsections (g) through (l), respectively; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H163EC8E910324BBAA93FE666DCB3C6D4"><enum>(2)</enum><text>by inserting after subsection (e) the following:</text><quoted-block style="USC" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="H3861C7D5DC4A413BA21351C08EBDBBDB"><subsection id="H31915FAF97324F8CB9C0F52B3626EF1C"><enum>(f)</enum><header>Fixed route bus operator workstations</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Beginning 2 years after the date of enactment of this subsection, unless a recipient certifies that a labor organization representing the plurality of the frontline workforce employed by the recipient or, if applicable, employed by a contractor to the recipient, has agreed to waive this requirement with regard to the new fixed route bus being purchased with the requested Federal funds, the operator workstation of any new fixed route bus which is 30 or more feet in length with a useful life of 10 or more years purchased with Federal funds (with the exception of funds derived from section 5311) by a recipient shall be equipped with a barrier that—</text><paragraph id="H7EE62BAD852C43E5AFFA0F120B13B5FC"><enum>(1)</enum><text>reaches from the bus floor to the bus ceiling;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="HEC97A99B6A4C4226A75E65AAC66D26C0"><enum>(2)</enum><text>is capable of fully enclosing the workstation and preventing the unwanted entry of persons, fluids, and objects into the workstation; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H2DEA1B9D949A448A8E95835BF04057D8"><enum>(3)</enum><text>does not impede the operator’s lines of sight from the workstation to the exterior of the bus.</text></paragraph></subsection><after-quoted-block>.</after-quoted-block></quoted-block></paragraph></section></legis-body></bill>
