<distribution-code display="yes">II</distribution-code><congress>119th CONGRESS</congress><session>2d Session</session><legis-num>S. 4725</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES</current-chamber><action><action-date date="20260609">June 9, 2026</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="S369">Mr. Markey</sponsor> (for himself, <cosponsor name-id="S366">Ms. Warren</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S247">Mr. Wyden</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S313">Mr. Sanders</cosponsor>, and <cosponsor name-id="S322">Mr. Merkley</cosponsor>) introduced the following bill; which was read twice and referred to the <committee-name committee-id="SSAF00">Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>A BILL</legis-type><official-title>To amend the Food, Agriculture, Conservation, and Trade Act of 1990 to provide for high-priority research and extension grants for natural climate solutions, and for other purposes.</official-title></form><legis-body display-enacting-clause="yes-display-enacting-clause"><section section-type="section-one" id="id11883a9b688e482e98a7638af0c70f7c"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Natural Climate Solutions Research and Extension Act of 2026</short-title></quote>.</text></section><section id="id72B69F811A714DDBA5F00D2760EB4A28"><enum>2.</enum><header>High-priority research and extension for natural climate solutions</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">Section 1672(d) of the Food, Agriculture, Conservation, and Trade Act of 1990 (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/7/5925">7 U.S.C. 5925(d)</external-xref>) is amended by adding at the end the following:</text><quoted-block style="OLC" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="idFC99E2B72E4C4226BFE1950C777256B0"><paragraph id="id2204504587744F3F891BCA9AE849167E"><enum>(21)</enum><header>Natural climate solutions</header><text>Research and extension grants may be made under this section for the purpose of advancing land management practices that store carbon or reduce greenhouse gas emissions in agricultural lands and soils, grasslands, wetlands, and forests, including practices that—</text><subparagraph id="idea3928e71e094b6f8e746527ee1ac730"><enum>(A)</enum><text>are based on traditional ecological knowledge;</text></subparagraph><subparagraph id="iddc72c3dfc06448808ef0ad47658d6fc9"><enum>(B)</enum><text>promote biodiversity and climate change resilience; and</text></subparagraph><subparagraph id="id216c32f0f3024cdda920391b5baa06a6"><enum>(C)</enum><text>reduce runoff.</text></subparagraph></paragraph><after-quoted-block>.</after-quoted-block></quoted-block></section></legis-body></bill>
