Expressing support for the designation of November 20, 2026, as “Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Awareness Day”.

Whereas carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless gas that is produced whenever any fuel, such as natural gas, propane, gasoline, oil, kerosene, or charcoal, is burned;

Whereas, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are over 400 deaths and 20,000 emergency room visits as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning each year;

Whereas devices that produce carbon monoxide include automobiles, boats, and heating systems;

Whereas carbon monoxide from these devices may build up in enclosed spaces;

Whereas carbon monoxide is often referred to as the “silent killer” because of its odorless or undetectable traits;

Whereas when people inhale certain amounts of carbon monoxide, the gas enters the bloodstream and prevents the intake of oxygen, which may result in death;

Whereas, on September 2, 2021, Suzan “Suzie” Marie Hanna, of Bridgewater Township, New Jersey, tragically passed away from carbon monoxide poisoning while driving from her job in Flemington, New Jersey, to her home in Bridgewater, New Jersey, due to floodwaters preventing the movement of her automobile;

Whereas Suzan “Suzie” Marie Hanna graduated from Bridgewater Raritan High School and went on to receive her associate’s degree in criminal justice from Raritan Valley Community College; and

Whereas the Hanna family, in memory of their daughter, has fought to normalize drivers to acquire a Safety Hammer for their automobiles to prevent tragedies like Suzie’s from happening again and make New Jersey and the rest of the United States a safer place: Now, therefore, be it

Resolved, That the House of Representatives expresses support for the designation of “Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Awareness Day”.
