R. 9489</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES</current-chamber><action display="yes"><action-date date="20260625">June 25, 2026</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="T000460">Mr. Thompson of California</sponsor> (for himself, <cosponsor name-id="S001214">Mr. Steube</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="V000130">Mr. Vargas</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="B001301">Mr. Bergman</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="E000071">Mr. Ellzey</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="N000147">Ms. Norton</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="B001260">Mr. Buchanan</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S001185">Ms. Sewell</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="H001101">Mr. Harrigan</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="M001160">Ms. Moore of Wisconsin</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="K000399">Mrs. Kiggans of Virginia</cosponsor>, and <cosponsor name-id="T000488">Mr. Thanedar</cosponsor>) introduced the following bill; which was referred to the <committee-name committee-id="HWM00">Committee on Ways and Means</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>A BILL</legis-type><official-title display="yes">To amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to extend the time period for the contribution of military death benefits to Roth IRAs and Coverdell education savings accounts.</official-title></form><legis-body id="H673DC8E0C2684EFBAFEC9F54987255B0" style="OLC"><section id="H1F7F61EB1633435A8355A7B1635773F0" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>GRACE for Military Survivors Act</short-title></quote>.</text></section><section id="HE5BDAD6746A043E18B613CF326B0B7AB"><enum>2.</enum><header>Extension of time period for contribution of military death benefits to Roth IRAs and Coverdell education savings accounts</header><subsection id="HB1EC9801C1AF47E7B30CE03B642B9BA7"><enum>(a)</enum><header>In general</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Sections <external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/26/408A">408A(e)(2)(A)</external-xref> and <external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/26/530">530(d)(9)(A)</external-xref> of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 are each amended by striking <quote>1-year period</quote> and inserting <quote>3-year period</quote>.</text></subsection><subsection id="HBE9D393C63B641F48F3564560C4263AF"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Effective dates</header><paragraph id="H4DB17234488E4AB78930A6CE28F36894"><enum>(1)</enum><header>In general</header><text>Except as provided by paragraph (2), the amendments made by this section shall apply to amounts received under section 1477 of title 10, United States Code, or section 1967 of title 38 of such Code, on or after the date of the enactment of this Act.</text></paragraph><paragraph id="HDE55309F38134FA8B46A9803311650C2"><enum>(2)</enum><header>Application of amendments to amounts received between October 7, 2001 and before enactment</header><text>The amendments made by this section shall apply to any contribution made pursuant to section 408A(e)(2)(A) or 530(d)(5) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986, as amended by this Act, with respect to amounts received under section 1477 of title 10, United States Code, or section 1967 of title 38 of such Code, on or after October 7, 2001, and before the date of the enactment of this Act, if such contribution is made before the later of—</text><subparagraph id="HF7D59084B2F24C8A91CF9374E6558FA6"><enum>(A)</enum><text>the date which is 3 years after the date on which such amounts were so received, or</text></subparagraph><subparagraph id="H309F42867CC84ADDB0A7E76B78CB893E"><enum>(B)</enum><text>the date which is 1 year after the date of the enactment of this Act.</text></subparagraph></paragraph></subsection></section></legis-body></bill>
