<section id="H9C9AC368037B4EB7895F531F1645B20B" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>American Electric Rail Mapping Act of 2026</short-title></quote>.</text></section> <section id="H2A5D6819C1514619815B5F957AFF6146"><enum>2.</enum><header>Study on rail electrification</header> <subsection id="HB9868D026FF04527BDCF7A92E8932BCA"><enum>(a)</enum><header>In general</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">The Administrator of the Federal Railroad Administration, acting through the Associate Administrator of the Office of Research, Data, and Innovation, shall conduct a study on the feasibility of rail electrification along passenger and freight corridors across the United States.</text></subsection> 
<subsection id="H65F0C0F9CA934C0D9A1F1B39F92FA37E"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Contents</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">In conducting the study required under subsection (a), the Administrator shall identify—</text> <paragraph id="H2B0E2EE0371C44AFA4F0180872FEF863"><enum>(1)</enum><text>all existing and imminently planned rail corridors in the United States;</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="HEC920681FC7F4BE786E4BCA0BB367017"><enum>(2)</enum><text>within each such corridor, with respect to each rail system—</text> <subparagraph id="H8A2DCBAC80914CF89FF98F6AA0917478"><enum>(A)</enum><text>how such system is powered; and</text></subparagraph> 
<subparagraph id="H1A757975A7054629ADF99511CE79E4F9"><enum>(B)</enum><text>whether such system is a Class I, II, or III railroad;</text></subparagraph></paragraph> <paragraph id="H0F6D4B741B7B4A41BB42343AD4C66F90"><enum>(3)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">any rail corridor segments in which rail electrification may be feasible; and</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="H75CD7C7885CA45E59FDE10E4ED08916A"><enum>(4)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">any rail corridor segments in which clean rail technologies may be adopted.</text></paragraph> </subsection> <subsection id="H84BC343444154821A3451F14A1AC6322"><enum>(c)</enum><header>Consultation</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">In carrying out the study described in this section, the Administrator shall consult with railroad owners and operators, governments of States, localities, Tribes, the District of Columbia, and the territories of the United States, and any other entities the Administrator determines appropriate.</text> </subsection> 
<subsection id="H18199ABAF0B74407BCA609C403AD2DEB"><enum>(d)</enum><header>Reuse of resources</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">In carrying out the study described in this section, the Administrator shall use any existing resources of the Administration, as applicable, to minimize expenditures.</text></subsection> <subsection id="HB03E1590220546E49E49A276758D23BF"><enum>(e)</enum><header>Report</header> <paragraph id="H6E8FE779899F4F6AB24948DA74D19D36"><enum>(1)</enum><header>Initial progress report</header><text>Not later than 1 year after the date of enactment of this Act, the Administrator shall submit to Congress a report on the progress of carrying out the study required under this section.</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="H95384B758C1B43B299910DA6EC2EEC6F"><enum>(2)</enum><header>Final report</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Not later than 1 year after the Administrator submits the report under paragraph (1), the Administrator shall submit to Congress a final report describing the results of the study required under this section.</text></paragraph></subsection> </section> </legis-body></bill>
