<section id="HBC1AF29BDB3E4B85B5275AECD21EE1C7" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Puerto Rico Energy Opportunity and Geothermal Assessment Act of 2026</short-title></quote>.</text></section> <section id="H3F639FF7651B492DB28D4DD3EA72D7EA" section-type="subsequent-section"><enum>2.</enum><header>Geothermal assessments for Commonwealth of Puerto Rico</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">Section 2501 of the Energy Policy Act of 1992 (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/30/1028">30 U.S.C. 1028</external-xref>) is amended—</text> 
<paragraph id="HBCA4C603BBE94DE5BE1BFD6791F65FF4"><enum>(1)</enum><text>in subsection (c)(2), by striking <quote>the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and</quote>;</text></paragraph> <paragraph id="HCFD40E827E7E4620A95678006D15DEB7"><enum>(2)</enum><text>by redesignating subsection (d) as subsection (e); and</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="H1508023949EE4BE0A4D98583B59F9417"><enum>(3)</enum><text>by inserting after subsection (c) the following:</text> <quoted-block style="OLC" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="H316FB148DF4842E9AD862FBCD867A0F6"> <subsection id="HE093ED3AE05F449A894A88371F8889D3"><enum>(d)</enum><header>Puerto Rico</header> <paragraph id="H68ADED0B9DA24643A95B425FB1DC4AB1"><enum>(1)</enum><header>In general</header><text>In carrying out the update required under subsection (c), the Secretary of the Interior, acting through the Director of the United States Geological Survey, in consultation with the Secretary of Energy, and in coordination with relevant officials of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and institutions of higher education, shall conduct geothermal assessments, including enhanced geothermal systems assessments, for the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.</text> </paragraph> 
<paragraph id="H6281B5F4B3544D97A88ABC86B13B50CB"><enum>(2)</enum><header>Requirements</header><text>The geothermal assessments conducted under paragraph (1) shall include—</text> <subparagraph id="H588C93F4674444B993D68871D849DCD3"><enum>(A)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">the production of high-resolution maps and supporting geospatial data consistent with the requirements of subsection (c)(1)(D);</text></subparagraph> 
<subparagraph id="H53AC54C2DE454AA8A46790D8C8DD286F"><enum>(B)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">assessments of groundwater vulnerability associated with enhanced geothermal systems exploration and development, with particular attention to karst terrain and other highly transmissive aquifer systems; and</text></subparagraph> <subparagraph id="H31B2E9B5B6B147319F027D30D3F80454"><enum>(C)</enum><text>assessments of seismic hazards and induced seismicity risks associated with enhanced geothermal systems exploration and development.</text> </subparagraph></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="H9A959C86CC9542A5849885C098A9932C"><enum>(3)</enum><header>Reports</header><text>Not later than 1 year after the date of the enactment of this subsection and biennially thereafter until the date of the completion of the assessment required under paragraph (1), the Secretary of the Interior, acting through the Director of the United States Geological Survey, shall submit to the Committee on Natural Resources of the House of Representatives and the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources of the Senate a report regarding the geothermal assessments required under paragraph (1), including—</text> <subparagraph id="HF98F3FC3ACF84ACCB28F67F2FB653456"><enum>(A)</enum><text>the status of each activity carried out and product developed pursuant to the assessments;</text></subparagraph> 
<subparagraph id="HBA3282D6770047A0A047FE077B6E7F96"><enum>(B)</enum><text>a description of the coordination carried out pursuant to the assessments;</text></subparagraph> <subparagraph id="HCED9E3061C8D4AACAF5272FD2BCE3CF4"><enum>(C)</enum><text>preliminary results of the assessments, as available;</text></subparagraph> 
<subparagraph id="H2E0C136BB7A74B9DBCABF4C31D18147F"><enum>(D)</enum><text>a description of obstacles to the completion of the assessments; and</text></subparagraph> <subparagraph id="HE7E670B4C42549C88BE0D2BDBEC186D7"><enum>(E)</enum><text>the planned next steps of the Secretary in conducting the assessments.</text></subparagraph></paragraph></subsection><after-quoted-block>.</after-quoted-block></quoted-block> </paragraph></section>
