<section id="H8B5F79580AD341D9831436E6D5F882FD" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header>
 <text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Understanding AI in the Classroom Act</short-title></quote>.</text></section> 
<section id="H477632D158F0441CB25570B8D892DFB7"><enum>2.</enum><header>Workshops related to the integration of artificial intelligence into classrooms</header> 
<subsection id="H3C79A1F2D4D04B1B85121D52BD226E4F"><enum>(a)</enum><header>In general</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Not later than 18 months after the date of the enactment of this Act, the Director shall complete workshops to identify any gaps in relevant data and published findings related to any effect on or harm to children as a result of the integration of artificial intelligence into classrooms, including with respect to the following:</text> <paragraph id="HA7810C4B010B44A3918F1CA7873D1D6A"><enum>(1)</enum><text>The attention span and learning independence of children.</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="H23FAC75087C94DC6A20D7BFA75DAD41F"><enum>(2)</enum><text>The cognitive, social, emotional, or behavioral development of children.</text></paragraph> <paragraph id="H76421A28F8E045CF8F4873F33725DD3E"><enum>(3)</enum><text>Any over-reliance or trust miscalibration on artificial intelligence by children.</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="HF98EA5ED027244058B6D70B8E2BBE176"><enum>(4)</enum><text>Any differential effect on children based on the following:</text> <subparagraph id="HAD16B7536AD04A8B9B50D505E945B25B"><enum>(A)</enum><text>Age.</text></subparagraph> 
<subparagraph id="HB2CB3E774A4945A5BAD2778F404AD8CE"><enum>(B)</enum><text>Any vulnerability that may impact children.</text></subparagraph> <subparagraph id="H98E62B833FC241DA8BE73B3E45C382EC"><enum>(C)</enum><text>Any characteristic of such artificial intelligence, including sycophancy.</text></subparagraph></paragraph></subsection> 
<subsection id="H0EE8372ECC0747B88CE648DD6D8DD72A"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Participation</header><text>In carrying out subsection (a), the Director may seek the participation of the following:</text> <paragraph id="HDF6235FB1BA94899BC3F31E179384AFE" commented="no"><enum>(1)</enum><text>Researchers.</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="H3C70DB124260408CB95F9859C1AACFF1" commented="no"><enum>(2)</enum><text>Educators.</text></paragraph> <paragraph id="H3FFA8246C0194FBBB4FD5268DC18B9BA" commented="no"><enum>(3)</enum><text>School leaders.</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="HCC1AB06D1A934747B66493E3A8F6D008" commented="no"><enum>(4)</enum><text>Parent groups.</text></paragraph> <paragraph id="H3C0FDB0BE511441BA25B8EC9DFF89C05"><enum>(5)</enum><text>Any other person the Director determines appropriate.</text> </paragraph></subsection> 
<subsection id="H8A49F1393B14459492339FF8CDB7562B"><enum>(c)</enum><header>Report</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Not later than 6 months after the Director completes the workshops described in subsection (a), the Director shall submit to the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology of the House of Representatives and the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation of the Senate, and publish, a report that includes information related to any gaps identified under such subsection.</text></subsection> <subsection id="HE9E1919DDE8B4FA287141DB1292B863F"><enum>(d)</enum><header>Definitions</header><text>In this section:</text> 
<paragraph id="H38DC8F8C348041D18D0A9E07E34D543C"><enum>(1)</enum><header>Artificial intelligence</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">The term <quote>artificial intelligence</quote> has the meaning given the term in section 5002 of the National Artificial Intelligence Initiative Act of 2020 (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/15/9401">15 U.S.C. 9401</external-xref>).</text></paragraph> <paragraph id="HC384571610A143C08C0E55D2ABB6E7D3"><enum>(2)</enum><header>Child</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">The term <quote>child</quote> has the meaning given the term in section 8101 of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/20/7801">20 U.S.C. 7801</external-xref>).</text></paragraph> 
<paragraph id="HF8DBC8675B02499282009B098185BA5C"><enum>(3)</enum><header>Director</header><text>The term <quote>Director</quote> means the Director of the National Science Foundation.</text></paragraph></subsection></section> </legis-body></bill>
