RES. 158</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES</current-chamber><action display="yes"><action-date date="20260421">April 21, 2026</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="C001129">Mr. Collins</sponsor> (for himself, <cosponsor name-id="B001291">Mr. Babin</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="B000490">Mr. Bishop</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="E000071">Mr. Ellzey</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="H001095">Mr. Hunt</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="L000603">Mr. Luttrell</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="M001199">Mr. Mast</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="M001239">Mr. McGuire</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="V000135">Mr. Van Orden</cosponsor>, and <cosponsor name-id="F000485">Mr. Fuller</cosponsor>) submitted the following joint resolution; which was referred to the <committee-name committee-id="HJU00">Committee on the Judiciary</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>JOINT RESOLUTION</legis-type><official-title display="yes">Encouraging States to establish <quote>Veterans Tax Relief Weekends</quote> that coincide with Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Veterans Day, providing a practical way for communities across the country to recognize the service of veterans and members of the Armed Forces by providing financial relief to them.</official-title></form><preamble><whereas><text>Whereas a State may elect to establish three-day sales tax holidays, for veterans and military families, that coincide with Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Veterans Day, national holidays that honor military service;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas such establishment would provide practical financial relief to veterans and military families while creating three annual national moments for Americans to recognize the service and sacrifice of those who defend the country;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas participation by States would be voluntary, preserving State authority over tax policy;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas eligible participants would include veterans, members of the Armed Forces on active duty, Reserves, and members of the National Guard;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas such tax holidays would provide temporary relief from State sales taxes on consumer purchases;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas Memorial Day weekend honors the men and women who gave their lives in service to the United States while supporting surviving military families and veterans;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas Independence Day recognizes those who defend the freedoms celebrated on the 4th of July and connects military service directly to America’s founding ideals;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas Veterans Day weekend creates a national moment focused specifically on recognizing the millions of veterans who have served the Nation;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas nearly 18,000,000 veterans live in the United States, with millions of members of the Armed Forces and military families;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas military families are deeply connected to local communities;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas States already use sales tax holidays for purchases of back-to-school and disaster preparedness supplies;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas establishment of a State sales tax holiday does not require new Federal spending;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas supporting veterans and military families remains one of the most bipartisan priorities in Congress: Now, therefore, be it</text></whereas></preamble><resolution-body style="traditional" id="HE86056227E0B4F06A93AE772091BD038"><section display-inline="yes-display-inline" section-type="undesignated-section" id="H52C57D4B7033408A91809ED1B9D5D82B"><enum/><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">That it is the sense of Congress to encourage States to establish <quote>Veterans Tax Relief</quote> that coincide with Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Veterans Day, providing a practical way for communities across the country to recognize the service of America’s veterans by providing financial relief to them.</text></section></resolution-body></resolution>
