RES. 894</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES</current-chamber><action display="yes"><action-date date="20241114">November 14, 2024</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="S415">Mr. Warnock</sponsor> (for himself and <cosponsor name-id="S372">Mrs. Capito</cosponsor>) submitted the following resolution; which was referred to the <committee-name committee-id="SSCM00">Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>RESOLUTION</legis-type><official-title display="yes">Designating December 1, 2024, as <quote>Drive Safer Sunday</quote>.</official-title></form><preamble><whereas><text>Whereas motor vehicle travel is the primary means of transportation in the United States;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas every individual traveling on roads and highways needs to drive in a safer manner in order to reduce deaths and injuries that result from motor vehicle crashes;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, wearing a seat belt saves more than 15,000 lives each year;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas Road Safe America, a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization founded after the tragic death of Cullum Owings on December 1, 2002, in a preventable truck accident, has been committed to raising awareness about the importance of driving safely;</text></whereas><whereas commented="no"><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Whereas the Senate wants all people of the United States to understand the life-saving importance of wearing a seat belt and encourages motorists to drive safely, not just during the holiday season, but every time they get behind the wheel; and</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the Sunday after Thanksgiving is 1 of the busiest highway traffic days of the year: Now, therefore, be it </text></whereas></preamble><resolution-body><section display-inline="yes-display-inline" section-type="undesignated-section" id="S1"><text>That the Senate—</text><paragraph id="id75a1b61e643949798e3ecee7e950522b"><enum>(1)</enum><text>encourages—</text><subparagraph id="id9f6baebcf2f24a7f80a62cc47363acd3"><enum>(A)</enum><text>high schools, colleges, universities, administrators, teachers, primary schools, and secondary schools to launch campus-wide educational campaigns to urge students to focus on safety when driving;</text></subparagraph><subparagraph id="id9ea37e48f50c48aa908d5e2ad88ba1f5"><enum>(B)</enum><text>national trucking firms—</text><clause commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="idc6d4dcdbdfa446479063ad85aa9adfc2"><enum>(i)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">to alert employee drivers to be especially focused on driving safely on the Sunday after Thanksgiving; and </text></clause><clause commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="idd72ab7b8708d4d8383a090e904a12fab"><enum>(ii)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">to publicize the importance of the day through use of Citizens Band (commonly known as <quote>CB</quote>) radios and truck stops across the United States;</text></clause></subparagraph><subparagraph id="id8c69c299008a463bb843ed45e5073fd2"><enum>(C)</enum><text>clergies to remind their members to travel safely when attending services and gatherings;</text></subparagraph><subparagraph id="idfe1d49a06c4a4ad9b84ebb41753874ed"><enum>(D)</enum><text>law enforcement personnel to remind drivers and passengers to drive safely, particularly on the Sunday after Thanksgiving; and</text></subparagraph><subparagraph id="idb1dd9a6fd1a84d04b28a76ad1f911617"><enum>(E)</enum><text>all people of the United States to use the Sunday after Thanksgiving as an opportunity to educate themselves about highway safety; and</text></subparagraph></paragraph><paragraph id="id37f563f233be4945aa8712a83c15d773"><enum>(2)</enum><text>designates December 1, 2024, as <quote>Drive Safer Sunday</quote>. </text></paragraph></section></resolution-body></resolution>
