RES. 607</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES</current-chamber><action display="yes"><action-date date="20240321">March 21, 2024</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="S404">Mr. Scott of Florida</sponsor> (for himself, <cosponsor name-id="S412">Mr. Tuberville</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S355">Mr. Cruz</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S416">Mrs. Britt</cosponsor>, and <cosponsor name-id="S398">Mr. Cramer</cosponsor>) submitted the following resolution; which was referred to the <committee-name committee-id="SSFR00">Committee on Foreign Relations</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>RESOLUTION</legis-type><official-title display="yes">Condemning the Nicaraguan Government’s unjust imprisonment of individuals affiliated with Mountain Gateway Order, Inc.</official-title></form><preamble><whereas><text>Whereas, in December, 2023, 11 individuals affiliated with Mountain Gateway Order, Inc. were arrested by the Government of Nicaragua, namely: Marcos Sergio Hernández Jirón; Harry Lening Rios Bravo; Manuel de Jesús Ríos Flores; José Luis Orozco Urrutia; Álvaro Daniel Escobar Caldera; Juan Carlos Chavarría Zapata; Juan Luis Moncada; Orvin Alexis Moncada Castellano, César Facundo Burgalin Miranda, Walner Omier Blandón Ochoa, and Marisela de Fátima Mejía Ruiz;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas there is concern that the Government of Nicaragua has charged each of these individuals for crimes on baseless claims of money laundering and organized crime;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the accused individuals do not have adequate access to legal counsel;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas there is concern that United States citizens affiliated with Mountain Gateway Order, Inc. are being targeted for arrest and extradition by the Government of Nicaragua;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas this follows a pattern by the Government of Nicaragua to quell the free speech and religious rights of Christians and other nongovernmental organizations in Nicaragua;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, on November 30, 2022, in accordance with the International Religious Freedom Act of 1998 (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/22/6401">22 U.S.C. 6401 et seq.</external-xref>), the Secretary of State designated Nicaragua as a <quote>Country of Particular Concern</quote> for having engaged in or tolerated particularly severe violations of religious freedom;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the Government of Nicaragua’s actions are another example of an extreme intolerance of religious organizations; and</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas Congress has a vested interest in upholding international religious freedom and human rights: Now, therefore, be it</text></whereas></preamble><resolution-body style="traditional" id="H38D7759CC18B4B6EBB7E05460B2D6D58"><section display-inline="yes-display-inline" section-type="undesignated-section" id="H10C65E088FC64340BE9D2E21B8A0A783"><enum/><text>That the Senate—</text><paragraph id="H4EE3C38F6B9B46F2B28B3A1940A5E926"><enum>(1)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">condemns the targeting and imprisonment of individuals affiliated with Mountain Gateway Order, Inc. without due process of law; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="HFD6E912723B046C69443CAAE0B869B22"><enum>(2)</enum><text>calls on the Government of Nicaragua to take prompt action to address these violations of religious freedom and international human rights.</text></paragraph></section></resolution-body></resolution>
