which was referred to the <committee-name committee-id="SSJU00">Committee on the Judiciary</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>RESOLUTION</legis-type><official-title display="yes">Recognizing and supporting the goals and ideals of National Medicolegal Death Investigation Professionals Week.</official-title></form><preamble><whereas><text>Whereas the Senate is committed to the use of highly trained medicolegal death investigation professionals to ensure that the suspicious, violent, unattended, unexplained, and unexpected deaths that occur throughout the United States are investigated;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas medicolegal death investigation professionals are an indispensable component of the public health and public safety systems in the United States as they speak for those who can no longer speak for themselves;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas medicolegal death investigation professionals partner with—</text><paragraph id="id02dfa1e55b1640faa4ff08d483765517"><enum>(1)</enum><text>local and national agencies to build and maintain public health databases relating to injury, illness, disease; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id0b01156545c04428a8f4f67c77d13f20"><enum>(2)</enum><text>Federal, State, and local agencies to ensure public safety;</text></paragraph></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas medicolegal death investigation professionals aim to complete the highest quality medicolegal death investigations through national standards; and</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the week of January 21, 2024, through January 27, 2024, is recognized as <quote>National Medicolegal Death Investigation Professionals Week</quote>: Now, therefore, be it</text></whereas></preamble><resolution-body><section id="S1" display-inline="yes-display-inline" section-type="undesignated-section"><text>That the Senate—</text><paragraph id="id322c305d275144309c0700fce3ec379b"><enum>(1)</enum><text>supports the goals and ideals of National Medicolegal Death Investigation Professionals Week; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="ide5ab963ac3e04261a30df83931af24b6"><enum>(2)</enum><text>recognizes that National Medicolegal Death Investigation Professionals Week provides a special opportunity for—</text><subparagraph commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="idfced238c08624be48325594f17a1d717"><enum>(A)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">medicolegal death investigation professionals to—</text><clause id="id96e0d32a253a49c8beae0bca6c264446"><enum>(i)</enum><text>acknowledge the contributions of medicolegal death investigation professionals working throughout the jurisdictions of the United States;</text></clause><clause id="id49c9d2a13f864d2eaba8995fc64ff16a"><enum>(ii)</enum><text>organize community events to encourage a better understanding of medicolegal death investigations;</text></clause><clause id="id570371fecb2446da94e9979de821c042"><enum>(iii)</enum><text>provide tours to Federal, State, and local policymakers to assist those individuals in gaining better insight into the current capabilities of medicolegal death investigation professionals and the future demands that medicolegal death investigation professionals will face; and</text></clause><clause id="ida6d751aeddc142e0859380e3b4649e9d"><enum>(iv)</enum><text>contact and invite local media outlets to cover events hosted during National Medicolegal Death Investigation Professionals Week;</text></clause></subparagraph><subparagraph id="ida12ba86839cb457c8f1256b2d53fe8f5"><enum>(B)</enum><text>local policymakers to—</text><clause id="id81e74982838045c1846e5ed678dadf1f"><enum>(i)</enum><text>recognize, through formal commendation or resolution, the contributions of local medicolegal death investigation professionals to the communities of those policymakers;</text></clause><clause id="idc5e750a16e9e4898908a1c72c516dc74"><enum>(ii)</enum><text>formally declare the week of January 21, 2024, through January 27, 2024, to be <quote>National Medicolegal Death Investigation Professionals Week</quote>;</text></clause><clause id="id452785f7ac504552bfbe6d85537d3062"><enum>(iii)</enum><text>visit local medicolegal death investigation professionals in their jurisdictions to gain an understanding of the capabilities and needs of those jurisdictions; and</text></clause><clause id="id40a57ae9e694462eb5450ffdde6ca60b"><enum>(iv)</enum><text>discuss the operational needs of State and local medicolegal death investigation jurisdictions;</text></clause></subparagraph><subparagraph id="idd4d6c288074e4ca3827b4cde89d74dec"><enum>(C)</enum><text>individuals in the United States, including members of the media, to—</text><clause id="id8ed2886ec39849efbaefb7ade46a3e72"><enum>(i)</enum><text>attend community events sponsored by local medicolegal death investigation jurisdictions;</text></clause><clause id="idbeac13e07e084063a94534d83e9f41a6"><enum>(ii)</enum><text>take tours of local medical examiner and coroner offices; and</text></clause><clause id="idc6565eed458f471c85a41f0949b976b7"><enum>(iii)</enum><text>ask local medical examiner and coroner offices about the operational and legislative needs of those jurisdictions;</text></clause></subparagraph><subparagraph id="idaa6f1bcee7bd4472857a5a07d61dc61d"><enum>(D)</enum><text>members of the media to highlight local news stories that focus on the work of local medicolegal death investigation professionals in the communities they serve; and</text></subparagraph><subparagraph id="id462bca9b18bf475ca9c0ba3c2ee9036b"><enum>(E)</enum><text>public safety officers, law enforcement officers, and court officers to—</text><clause id="idf01cb55df99d49bb9ce3e1c08a0ef826"><enum>(i)</enum><text>attend community events sponsored by local medicolegal death investigation jurisdictions;</text></clause><clause id="id921ad93ac7bf47abbf97e1b64781a8fc"><enum>(ii)</enum><text>take tours of local medical examiner and coroner offices; </text></clause><clause id="idf1d5b7c5777a4c79af932dc77986d360"><enum>(iii)</enum><text>discuss the operational needs of State and local medicolegal death investigation jurisdictions; and</text></clause><clause id="idd67fcaadb4c24b8b869e318e4fcdc3ae"><enum>(iv)</enum><text>engage with local medicolegal death investigation professionals about working together more effectively. </text></clause></subparagraph></paragraph></section></resolution-body></resolution>
