RES. 481</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES</current-chamber><action display="yes"><action-date date="20231130">November 30, 2023</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="S391">Mr. Young</sponsor> (for himself, <cosponsor name-id="S308">Mr. Cardin</cosponsor>, and <cosponsor name-id="S397">Mr. Braun</cosponsor>) submitted the following resolution; which was considered and agreed to</action-desc></action><legis-type>RESOLUTION</legis-type><official-title display="yes">Expressing support for the goals of Stomach Cancer Awareness Month.</official-title></form><preamble><whereas><text>Whereas stomach cancer, also known as gastric cancer, is 1 of the most difficult cancers to detect in the early stages of the disease, which contributes to high mortality rates;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas stomach cancer occurs when cancer cells develop in the lining of the stomach;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas stomach cancer is the fifth most commonly diagnosed type of cancer worldwide;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, in 2023, an estimated—</text><paragraph id="id68658a9a8dff4a89bb6a1efbe5c3ed1a"><enum>(1)</enum><text>26,500 cases of stomach cancer will be diagnosed in the United States; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="idac3a92c1768a45ff93b74dee613e60af"><enum>(2)</enum><text>11,130 individuals in the United States will die from stomach cancer;</text></paragraph></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the estimated 5-year survival rate for stomach cancer is only 35.7 percent, and the 5-year survival rate is just 6.6 percent when diagnosed at a late, or distant, stage;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, in the United States, stomach cancer is more prevalent among racial and ethnic minorities;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the initial diagnosis of stomach cancer is often delayed because up to 80 percent of patients are asymptomatic during early stages;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas increased awareness of, and education about, stomach cancer among patients and health care providers could improve timely recognition of stomach cancer symptoms;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas more research into early diagnosis, screening, and treatment for stomach cancer is needed; and</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas November 2023 is an appropriate month to observe Stomach Cancer Awareness Month: Now, therefore, be it </text></whereas></preamble><resolution-body><section id="S1" display-inline="yes-display-inline" section-type="undesignated-section"><text>That the Senate—</text><paragraph id="idfe986658efa4492497d8a08d4a62de93"><enum>(1)</enum><text>supports the goals of Stomach Cancer Awareness Month;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id37b68b516d104ca1bc2b280b37fa2e0a"><enum>(2)</enum><text>supports efforts to increase awareness of, and education about, stomach cancer among the general public of the United States;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id7bb437b843294834aac608721f419716"><enum>(3)</enum><text>recognizes the need for additional research into early diagnosis, screening, and treatment for stomach cancer; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id5254e7073bd24995a75a5a62af245379"><enum>(4)</enum><text>encourages States, territories, and localities of the United States to support the goals of Stomach Cancer Awareness Month. </text></paragraph></section></resolution-body></resolution>
