<distribution-code display="yes">II</distribution-code><congress>118th CONGRESS</congress><session>1st Session</session><legis-num>S. 596</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES</current-chamber><action><action-date date="20230301">March 1, 2023</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="S362">Mr. Kaine</sponsor> (for himself, <cosponsor name-id="S343">Mr. Boozman</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S388">Ms. Hassan</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S381">Mr. Rounds</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S385">Ms. Cortez Masto</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S293">Mr. Graham</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S341">Mr. Blumenthal</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S398">Mr. Cramer</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S370">Mr. Booker</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S374">Mr. Cotton</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S366">Ms. Warren</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S404">Mr. Scott of Florida</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S415">Mr. Warnock</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S396">Mrs. Blackburn</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S324">Mrs. Shaheen</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S288">Ms. Murkowski</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S408">Mr. Hickenlooper</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S347">Mr. Moran</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S331">Mrs. Gillibrand</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S344">Mr. Hoeven</cosponsor>, and <cosponsor name-id="S327">Mr. Warner</cosponsor>) introduced the following bill; which was read twice and referred to the <committee-name committee-id="SSFI00">Committee on Finance</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>A BILL</legis-type><official-title>To amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to make employers of spouses of military personnel eligible for the work opportunity credit.</official-title></form><legis-body style="OLC" display-enacting-clause="yes-display-enacting-clause" id="H9A3E4023BD2043269B6438AD678F56EF"><section display-inline="no-display-inline" section-type="section-one" id="H50E6BF0D26DB4EAD84DEA31AFCC5FB1F"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Military Spouse Hiring Act</short-title></quote>.</text></section><section id="H8F06E94A9F3942C7BD6D0E668EF201A4"><enum>2.</enum><header>Eligibility of spouses of military personnel for the work opportunity credit</header><subsection id="H7416A324C9D74E70AF5713D6AB12D1D8"><enum>(a)</enum><header>In general</header><text>Paragraph (1) of <external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/26/51">section 51(d)</external-xref> of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 is amended by striking <quote>or</quote> at the end of subparagraph (I), by striking the period at the end of subparagraph (J) and inserting <quote>, or</quote>, and by adding at the end the following new subparagraph:</text><quoted-block style="OLC" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="H9FA9E68321EC4E2A987D6C713D677487"><subparagraph id="H98B19210F687400D8CF1A1C10ED4A77F"><enum>(K)</enum><text>a qualified military spouse.</text></subparagraph><after-quoted-block>.</after-quoted-block></quoted-block></subsection><subsection id="H5B512F9EB789439AB2326EA563280354"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Qualified military spouse</header><text>Subsection (d) of section 51 of such Code is amended by adding at the end the following new paragraph:</text><quoted-block style="OLC" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="HA5B0B115E44F4CE6B32AA0B6A4B946DB"><paragraph id="H10DE8E24DDBB4B64B40790618A71DA0E"><enum>(16)</enum><header>Qualified military spouse</header><text>The term <term>qualified military spouse</term> means any individual who is certified by the designated local agency as being (as of the hiring date) a spouse of a member of the Armed Forces of the United States.</text></paragraph><after-quoted-block>.</after-quoted-block></quoted-block></subsection><subsection id="H2436560A5087406B9F16799BFE039CB8"><enum>(c)</enum><header>Effective date</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">The amendments made by this section shall apply to amounts paid or incurred after the date of the enactment of this Act to individuals who begin work for the employer after such date.</text></subsection></section></legis-body></bill>
