<distribution-code display="yes">II</distribution-code><congress>118th CONGRESS</congress><session>2d Session</session><legis-num>S. 3574</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES</current-chamber><action><action-date date="20240110">January 10, 2024</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="S397">Mr. Braun</sponsor> (for himself and <cosponsor name-id="S380">Mr. Peters</cosponsor>) introduced the following bill; which was read twice and referred to the <committee-name committee-id="SSJU00">Committee on the Judiciary</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>A BILL</legis-type><official-title>To amend <external-xref legal-doc="usc-chapter" parsable-cite="usc-chapter/36/3">chapter 3</external-xref> of title 36, United States Code, to designate the mastodon as the national fossil of the United States.</official-title></form><legis-body><section id="S1" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>National Fossil Act</short-title></quote>.</text></section><section id="idC16A62C37DA74B33B285C7F266460533"><enum>2.</enum><header>National fossil of the United States</header><subsection id="id7E8A4C3A9EB94A518DBB0B7EF7843FCB"><enum>(a)</enum><header>Designation</header><text><external-xref legal-doc="usc-chapter" parsable-cite="usc-chapter/36/3">Chapter 3</external-xref> of title 36, United States Code, is amended by adding at the end the following:</text><quoted-block style="USC" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="id550CF570843D4BC7BF146656C359F2D1"><section id="idB78A2760D2684DCCBB00439AFCA46E3C"><enum>306.</enum><header>National fossil</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">The fossil of the genus Mammut, commonly known as the mastodon, is the national fossil.</text></section><after-quoted-block>.</after-quoted-block></quoted-block></subsection><subsection id="id47DA36444AA7410EB0462118A95557B5"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Conforming amendments</header><text>The table of sections for <external-xref legal-doc="usc-chapter" parsable-cite="usc-chapter/36/3">chapter 3</external-xref> of title 36, United States Code, is amended—</text><paragraph id="id848D4281E5BE4A2CAE1A42BE47D8734F"><enum>(1)</enum><text>by striking the chapter heading and inserting <quote><header-in-text style="USC" level="chapter">National anthem, motto, floral emblem, march, tree, and fossil</header-in-text></quote>; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id64A9BC0DDCB04A4983637DFD0D12CC37"><enum>(2)</enum><text>by adding at the end the following:</text><quoted-block style="OLC" id="id0196c897-b936-48e4-9f41-ba77549e256e"><toc><toc-entry level="section" idref="idB78A2760D2684DCCBB00439AFCA46E3C">306.
