<distribution-code display="yes">II</distribution-code><congress>118th CONGRESS</congress><session>1st Session</session><legis-num>S. 2972</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES</current-chamber><action><action-date date="20230928" legis-day="20230922">September 28 (legislative day, September 22), 2023</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="S346">Mr. Lee</sponsor> introduced the following bill; which was read twice and referred to the <committee-name committee-id="SSEG00">Committee on Energy and Natural Resources</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>A BILL</legis-type><official-title>To require the Secretary of the Interior to repay States for amounts expended by States to operate units of the National Park System during a Government shutdown.</official-title></form><legis-body><section id="id116fb369f24c4f13b944cfa2250dd20c" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Repayment of State funds used to operate units of the National Park System during a Government shutdown</header><subsection commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="idded4e28d14dc4f918039e4e328ed0b8a"><enum>(a)</enum><header display-inline="yes-display-inline">Definition of Government shutdown</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">In this section, the term <term>Government shutdown</term> means a lapse in appropriations for 1 or more agencies of the Federal Government.</text></subsection><subsection commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="id217bb9a6e800424293a4223935720a2b"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Repayment required</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Not later than 30 days after the date on which a Government shutdown ends, on the request of a State that expended State funds to operate 1 or more units of the National Park System in the State during the Government shutdown, the Secretary of the Interior shall pay to that State an amount equal to the amount expended by the State to operate the 1 or more units of the National Park System in that State during the Government shutdown. </text></subsection></section></legis-body></bill>
