<distribution-code display="yes">II</distribution-code><congress>118th CONGRESS</congress><session>1st Session</session><legis-num>S. 2725</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES</current-chamber><action><action-date date="20230905">September 5, 2023</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="S390">Mr. Van Hollen</sponsor> (for himself and <cosponsor name-id="S401">Mr. Romney</cosponsor>) introduced the following bill; which was read twice and referred to the <committee-name committee-id="SSFR00">Committee on Foreign Relations</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>A BILL</legis-type><official-title>To authorize the establishment of the US-ASEAN Center to support United States economic and cultural engagement with Southeast Asia.</official-title></form><legis-body><section id="idf41fdd0d9d544089865d561905a3d098" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>US-ASEAN Center</header><subsection id="id91ee94f83a9b4f238db582f4b1be9488"><enum>(a)</enum><header>Defined term</header><text>In this Act, the term <term>ASEAN</term> means the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.</text></subsection><subsection id="id09eeea0e43fd486ea0ee31398cd4b321"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Establishment</header><text>The Secretary of State is authorized to enter into a public-private partnership for the purposes of establishing a US-ASEAN Center in the United States to support United States economic and cultural engagement with Southeast Asia. </text></subsection><subsection commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="idb7b934be804b4a0696e3733a2df9a64d"><enum>(c)</enum><header>Functions</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Notwithstanding any other provision of law, the US-ASEAN Center established pursuant to subsection (b) may—</text><paragraph id="id5edf9e2e53cd48389229160f0c2c81d0"><enum>(1)</enum><text>provide grants for research to support and elevate the importance of the US-ASEAN partnership;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id0b00b0594ee043cab3f346bb15f587e3"><enum>(2)</enum><text>facilitate activities to strengthen US-ASEAN trade and investment;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id7185ae86ef7945cd989f4d91da373896"><enum>(3)</enum><text>expand economic and technological relationships between ASEAN countries and the United States into new areas of cooperation;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id5c528b8b47334c82a45bae3a5b186865"><enum>(4)</enum><text>provide training to United States citizens and citizens of ASEAN countries that improve people-to-people ties;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id1d559a756613460ba86ededec28e6553"><enum>(5)</enum><text>develop educational programs to increase awareness for the United States and ASEAN countries on the importance of relations between the United States and ASEAN countries; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="idcf40e045b20341efa531b58206bd5ffc"><enum>(6)</enum><text>carry out other activities the Secretary of State considers necessary to strengthen ties between the United States and ASEAN countries and achieve the objectives of the US-ASEAN Center.</text></paragraph></subsection></section></legis-body></bill>
