<distribution-code display="yes">II</distribution-code><congress>118th CONGRESS</congress><session>1st Session</session><legis-num>S. 2606</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES</current-chamber><action><action-date date="20230727">July 27, 2023</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="S413">Mr. Padilla</sponsor> (for himself, <cosponsor name-id="S366">Ms. Warren</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S409">Mr. Luján</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S253">Mr. Durbin</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S313">Mr. Sanders</cosponsor>, and <cosponsor name-id="S370">Mr. Booker</cosponsor>) introduced the following bill; which was read twice and referred to the <committee-name committee-id="SSJU00">Committee on the Judiciary</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>A BILL</legis-type><official-title>To amend section 249 of the Immigration and Nationality Act to render available to certain long-term residents of the United States the benefit under that section.</official-title></form><legis-body style="OLC" display-enacting-clause="yes-display-enacting-clause" id="H6174F08648E140D3A58D823F1D4391F9"><section section-type="section-one" id="HE20EC04FE4C64BC4915348A5F194C587"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Renewing Immigration Provisions of the Immigration Act of 1929</short-title></quote>.</text></section><section id="HDA6ED359A88640228951D5DFC7FEE102"><enum>2.</enum><header>Registry</header><subsection id="H7AE9DDBF68F744178FD3C28EBDFEDE6F"><enum>(a)</enum><header>In general</header><text>Section 249 of the Immigration and Nationality Act (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/8/1259">8 U.S.C. 1259</external-xref>) is amended—</text><paragraph id="HA2351499FADB4CAD9F8198E1D633A1BE"><enum>(1)</enum><text>in the section header, by striking <quote><header-in-text level="section" style="traditional">entered the united states prior to july 1, 1924 or january 1, 1972</header-in-text></quote>; and inserting <quote><header-in-text level="section" style="traditional">are long-term residents of the united states</header-in-text></quote>; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="HE1C50030FE59421588B4EFDAF49F95BC"><enum>(2)</enum><text>by amending subsection (a) to read as follows:</text><quoted-block style="OLC" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="H5E259FCB3ED4409C82CDDA2E96E170E9"><paragraph id="H04FFE3DA4F7A4CDEA790BA794311C396"><enum>(a)<?LEXA-Enum (a)?></enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">entered the United States at least 7 years before the application date;</text></paragraph><after-quoted-block>.</after-quoted-block></quoted-block></paragraph></subsection><subsection id="HC59C063E0CA0423F861D0C221B8708D7"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Effective date</header><text>The amendments made by this section shall take effect 60 days after the date of the enactment of this Act.</text></subsection></section></legis-body></bill>
