<distribution-code display="yes">II</distribution-code><congress>118th CONGRESS</congress><session>1st Session</session><legis-num>S. 2508</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES</current-chamber><action><action-date date="20230726">July 26, 2023</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="S221">Mrs. Feinstein</sponsor> introduced the following bill; which was read twice and referred to the <committee-name committee-id="SSAS00">Committee on Armed Services</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>A BILL</legis-type><official-title>To require a report on Department of Defense security clearance process updates, and for other purposes.</official-title></form><legis-body><section id="id3705377e9d024ce3b423f755eced9a0c" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Report on Department of Defense security clearance process updates</header><subsection id="id8e0738a84301497db620f159b07bcdd5"><enum>(a)</enum><header>Study required</header><text>No later than 180 days after the date of the enactment of this Act, the Secretary of Defense shall submit to Congress a report on the status of the updates the Secretary is carrying out to the security clearance process and the methods the Secretary is pursuing to ensure the security clearance process of the Department of Defense continues to protect national security.</text></subsection><subsection commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="id2ec35f7dcbe34ddcbcc4e367e6c2099b"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Contents</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">The report submitted pursuant to subsection (a) shall include the following:</text><paragraph id="id588295cef84f47d88a4c9279fc59e43e"><enum>(1)</enum><text>A review of the last 10 years of cases of those who held security clearances granted by the Department that were ultimately charged with terrorism, espionage, sabotage, sedition, or other related crimes.</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id70579b780b6349ad9bfca18c60c7a74e"><enum>(2)</enum><text>A review of any existing internal processes applicable to the suspension of security clearances for those individuals.</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id7a301871543545b895b0907b45b360ab"><enum>(3)</enum><text>Any policy that may address revocation of clearances of individuals who are found to pose a threat to other members of the Armed Forces or to national security after their clearance process has been adjudicated. </text></paragraph><paragraph id="idff319dd9c83d44c08a7e2309ba3241f1"><enum>(4)</enum><text>Recommendations on enhancing existing security review processes and recommendations for future new processes to address any gaps identified and lessons learned from the review.</text></paragraph></subsection></section></legis-body></bill>
