<distribution-code display="yes">II</distribution-code><congress>118th CONGRESS</congress><session>1st Session</session><legis-num>S. 1980</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES</current-chamber><action><action-date date="20230614">June 14, 2023</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="S414">Mr. Ossoff</sponsor> (for himself and <cosponsor name-id="S384">Mr. Tillis</cosponsor>) introduced the following bill; which was read twice and referred to the <committee-name committee-id="SSAS00">Committee on Armed Services</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>A BILL</legis-type><official-title>To require the Secretary of Defense to provide housing accommodations for members of the Armed Forces and their dependents who are on military housing waitlists.</official-title></form><legis-body><section id="id47b24f932cc446c881644a8d63a833df" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Military Housing Wait Times Accountability Act</short-title></quote>.</text></section><section id="idca483991b3a14f4295eee3537993a51d"><enum>2.</enum><header>Housing accommodations for military families on housing waitlists</header><subsection id="id961e38a8a82244289a388089fef567a9"><enum>(a)</enum><header>Waitlist accommodations</header><text>The Secretary of Defense shall provide to members of the Armed Forces and their dependents who, when undergoing a permanent change of station, are placed on a waitlist for on-base housing for a period of more than 10 days following the date of arrival at the new location, temporary accommodations for the entire duration of such period appropriate for the total size and composition of the family of the member and at a rate not to exceed the basic allowance for housing calculated for such member under section 403 of title 37, United States Code.</text></subsection><subsection id="idbea4921430e94e26a6ea03e75ed5ba97"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Report</header><text>Not later than 180 days after the date of the enactment of this Act, the Secretary of Defense shall submit to the congressional defense committees a report containing—</text><paragraph id="id1F00399EA13446A5A57DAACDD17FCC54"><enum>(1)</enum><text>installation-specific data on the number of members of the Armed Forces and their dependents on military housing waitlists;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id0584D5CBB2154201BBBC022D8BDDB400"><enum>(2)</enum><text>an identification of the time spent by each such member and their dependents awaiting appropriate housing accommodations;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="idC0425FCCDBA04D4A9C150F03223BFD63"><enum>(3)</enum><text>an analysis of the factors that are creating the need for such waitlists; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="idDF8E128DA1014965974A9D6BAC0C03D4"><enum>(4)</enum><text>an assessment of the causes of waitlist durations that exceed 10 days.</text></paragraph></subsection></section></legis-body></bill>
