<distribution-code display="yes">II</distribution-code><congress>118th CONGRESS</congress><session>1st Session</session><legis-num>S. 1633</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES</current-chamber><action><action-date date="20230517">May 17, 2023</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="S366">Ms. Warren</sponsor> (for herself, <cosponsor name-id="S252">Ms. Collins</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S363">Mr. King</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S375">Mr. Daines</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S306">Mr. Menendez</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S314">Mr. Tester</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S344">Mr. Hoeven</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S311">Ms. Klobuchar</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S341">Mr. Blumenthal</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S284">Ms. Stabenow</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S398">Mr. Cramer</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S309">Mr. Casey</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S343">Mr. Boozman</cosponsor>, and <cosponsor name-id="S390">Mr. Van Hollen</cosponsor>) introduced the following bill; which was read twice and referred to the <committee-name committee-id="SSVA00">Committee on Veterans' Affairs</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>A BILL</legis-type><official-title>To amend title 38, United States Code, to recognize and honor the service of individuals who served in the United States Cadet Nurse Corps during World War II, and for other purposes.</official-title></form><legis-body><section id="S1" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>United States Cadet Nurse Corps Service Recognition Act of 2023</short-title></quote>.</text></section><section id="id3174c3cd4cf74f20835097fc8a44eccb"><enum>2.</enum><header>Recognition and honoring of service of individuals who served in United States Cadet Nurse Corps during World War II</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">Section 106 of title 38, United States Code, is amended by adding at the end the following new subsection:</text><quoted-block style="USC" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="idb154c1a3e4784e71955d13d13d23de56"><subsection id="id9f21faef1d1b48a3bad722dd01572708"><enum>(g)</enum><paragraph commented="no" display-inline="yes-display-inline" id="id6e83a1874e5846a09d390b281b1c9918"><enum>(1)</enum><subparagraph commented="no" display-inline="yes-display-inline" id="ida51b431e099a47c7bb60b6d4b7aff766"><enum>(A)</enum><text>Service as a member of the United States Cadet Nurse Corps during the period beginning on July 1, 1943, and ending on December 31, 1948, of any individual who was honorably discharged therefrom pursuant to subparagraph (B) shall be considered active duty for purposes of eligibility and entitlement to benefits under chapters 23 and 24 of this title (including with respect to headstones and markers), other than such benefits relating to the interment of the individual in Arlington National Cemetery provided solely by reason of such service.</text></subparagraph><subparagraph indent="up2" commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="id081aa4f59358434cae4cec0a54cfa911"><enum>(B)</enum><clause commented="no" display-inline="yes-display-inline" id="idbca8b6a4e3fd43a1b7bdce138f992f6b"><enum>(i)</enum><text>Not later than one year after the date of the enactment of this subsection, the Secretary of Defense shall issue to each individual who served as a member of the United States Cadet Nurse Corps during the period beginning on July 1, 1943, and ending on December 31, 1948, a discharge from such service under honorable conditions if the Secretary determines that the nature and duration of the service of the individual so warrants.</text></clause><clause indent="up1" commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="ida5994b1cd95b48f79c3f042df2cf8555"><enum>(ii)</enum><text>A discharge under clause (i) shall designate the date of discharge. The date of discharge shall be the date, as determined by the Secretary, of the termination of service of the individual concerned as described in that clause.</text></clause></subparagraph></paragraph><paragraph indent="up1" commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="id96b68e7d41c349a6a87a7f5f66b8d7d3"><enum>(2)</enum><text>An individual who receives a discharge under paragraph (1)(B) for service as a member of the United States Cadet Nurse Corps shall be honored as a veteran but shall not be entitled by reason of such service to any benefit under a law administered by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs, except as provided in paragraph (1)(A).</text></paragraph><paragraph indent="up1" commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="id81dd66dce80d4ea7a831c001ced45d2f"><enum>(3)</enum><text>The Secretary of Defense may design and produce a service medal or other commendation, or memorial plaque or grave marker, to honor individuals who receive a discharge under paragraph (1)(B).</text></paragraph></subsection><after-quoted-block>.</after-quoted-block></quoted-block></section></legis-body></bill>
