RES. 920</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES</current-chamber><action display="yes"><action-date date="20231211">December 11, 2023</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="F000474">Mr. Flood</sponsor> (for himself and <cosponsor name-id="H001091">Mrs. Hinson</cosponsor>) submitted the following resolution; which was referred to the <committee-name committee-id="HAG00">Committee on Agriculture</committee-name>, and in addition to the Committee on <committee-name committee-id="HFA00">Foreign Affairs</committee-name>, for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker, in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned</action-desc></action><legis-type>RESOLUTION</legis-type><official-title display="yes">Disapproving of recommendations by the United Nations to reduce meat consumption in the United States.</official-title></form><preamble><whereas><text>Whereas meat is a nutrient-rich source of protein that is enjoyed by many people in the United States and efficiently delivers calories and vitamins, greatly contributing to the world’s food security;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the United States is the world’s largest producer of beef;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, according to the Foreign Agriculture Service, in 2022, the United States exported 1,000,000 metric tons of beef valued $11.71 billion;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the United States is the world’s third-largest producer and consumer of pork and pork products;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, according to the Foreign Agriculture Service, in 2022, pork was the most widely consumed meat across the globe at 112,538 metric tons, representing 42 percent of all meat consumed;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the United States is the world’s largest producer of poultry meat;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas animal proteins are complete proteins and contain more protein per calorie than plant proteins;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas agriculture, food, and related industries contributed 5.4 percent or roughly $1.264 trillion to United States gross domestic product in 2021;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, in 2022, 22.1 million full- and part-time jobs were related to the agricultural and food sectors, which is 10.4 percent of total employment in the United States;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, in 2021, meat and poultry plants employed the largest percentage of food and beverage manufacturing workers;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization is expected to publish its global food systems’ road map to 1.5 degree Celsius recommending the reduction of meat consumption; and</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas reductions in meat consumption will have negative impacts on nutrition, the United States economy, and global food security: Now, therefore, be it</text></whereas></preamble><resolution-body style="traditional" id="HD66AB29BDEF845E08303A4092142F927"><section display-inline="yes-display-inline" section-type="undesignated-section" id="HCAB4776D5A494677A3172BBA83F566D0"><enum/><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">That the House of Representatives—</text><paragraph id="HE6D33841DF5C4A0D8630773ABF64E8BD"><enum>(1)</enum><text>recognizes the importance of meat and livestock production to the United States economy;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H19FA0FE26019437DA81F404C4583066B"><enum>(2)</enum><text>recognizes the importance of meat and animal-based protein;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="HDFF7AEA31B3A47CF85A05C336CCAEBAF"><enum>(3)</enum><text>disapproves of United Nations recommendation to reduce meat consumption in their global food systems’ road map; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H59E1ABDAE910490A92669489FEC7BF1D"><enum>(4)</enum><text>opposes the use of any Federal resources to support attempts to reduce meat consumption.</text></paragraph></section></resolution-body></resolution>
