<official-title display="yes">Condemning the horrific gun violence in Fort Worth, Texas, and acknowledging the human toll of gun violence in this country.</official-title>

<whereas><text>Whereas gun violence remains the leading cause of death for children and adolescents in the United States, according to the latest mortality data by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention;</text></whereas> <whereas><text>Whereas, on July 3, 2023, two separate mass shootings took place in Fort Worth’s Como and Polytechnic Heights neighborhoods in Texas;</text></whereas>
<whereas><text>Whereas the people of Texas mourn the innocent 3 lives that were lost during a mass shooting that left more than a dozen injured as the community gathered at ComoFest, an annual Fourth of July celebration;</text></whereas> <whereas><text>Whereas the lives of 18-year-olds Gabriella Navarrete and Paul Willis and 22-year-old Cynthia Santos were taken in what was supposed to be a celebration of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness;</text></whereas>
<whereas><text>Whereas their lives were taken from them, violently and senselessly, in another horrific tragedy due to gun violence;</text></whereas> <whereas><text>Whereas the Como and Polytechnic Heights neighborhoods recognize this tragic episode is absolutely not a depiction of the communities as a whole;</text></whereas>
<whereas><text>Whereas Como and Polytechnic Heights have created 2 of the most tight-knit, loving communities in Fort Worth;</text></whereas> <whereas><text>Whereas the Forth Worth Police Department continues to hear the concerns of and work with the residents of Como and Polytechnic Heights to combat violent crime;</text></whereas>
<whereas><text>Whereas Fort Worth’s overall violent crime as of June 2023 is down 7.4 percent compared to June 2022, according to the latest data from the Fort Worth Police Department;</text></whereas> <whereas><text>Whereas Como, Polytechnic Heights, and the Fort Worth Police Department remain committed to healing and making Fort Worth as safe as possible;</text></whereas>
<whereas><text>Whereas the Gun Violence Archive, a nonprofit research group that tracks gun violence, defines a mass shooting as one in which at least 4 people were killed or injured;</text></whereas> <whereas><text>Whereas, as of July 10, 2023, the Gun Violence Archive has counted and verified 371 mass shootings and more than 22,000 gun violence deaths in the United States this year; and</text></whereas>
<whereas><text>Whereas the people of the United States recognize the alarming continuance of gun violence in this country and the deep wounds such violence causes communities in the United States: Now, therefore, be it</text></whereas></preamble> <resolution-body style="traditional" id="HB86F814241A94B628F1F2E575D01C15B"> <section display-inline="yes-display-inline" section-type="undesignated-section" id="H4EC42AEDFCB04DBFB8E9CF8593B12709"><enum/><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">That the House of Representatives—</text>
<paragraph id="HD3BA7F79F7964F2D918BD2BA1FAFF335"><enum>(1)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">condemns the heinous mass shootings in Como and Polytechnic Heights in Fort Worth, Texas;</text></paragraph> <paragraph id="H7B13E70B0DB54724B8D47111FFAE5C6E"><enum>(2)</enum><text>honors the memory of the victims that were lost;</text></paragraph>
<paragraph id="H48AC43D41A08469ABBCB6E19299D7FD0"><enum>(3)</enum><text>expresses hope for a full and speedy recovery for people that were injured in the attack;</text></paragraph> <paragraph id="H87EB1B38123E48A3BACE2F226E305A9F"><enum>(4)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">expresses gratitude to community leaders and first responders for their commitment to help the residents of Como and Polytechnic Heights heal from this tragedy; and</text></paragraph>
<paragraph id="HA7BEC07BB63E4098AACFB6FDEA699D88"><enum>(5)</enum><text>acknowledges the human toll of gun violence in this country.</text></paragraph></section> </resolution-body> </resolution>
