RES. 419</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES</current-chamber><action display="yes"><action-date date="20230517">May 17, 2023</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="R000576">Mr. Ruppersberger</sponsor> submitted the following resolution; which was referred to the <committee-name committee-id="HIF00">Committee on Energy and Commerce</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>RESOLUTION</legis-type><official-title display="yes">Expressing support for the designation of May as Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome Awareness Month to increase the knowledge of this little-known, potentially fatal, genetic disease.</official-title></form><preamble><whereas><text>Whereas Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome represents multiple genetic disorders involving mutations in connective tissue that are characterized by looseness, instability, and dislocation of the joints and fragile skin that easily bruises and scars;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas there are 13 types of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome caused by genetic defects in collagen, one of the major structural components of the body;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas it is estimated that the prevalence of all types of the syndrome affect at least 1 in 5,000 people worldwide;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas a network of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome support groups can help connect those managing life with the disease as well as better inform the health care community and the public;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas early and accurate diagnosis can provide the opportunity to create lifesaving medical plans and ensure the quality of life;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas there is currently no treatment for Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and no known cure;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas further medical research and awareness bring hope for treatment and a cure; and</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the month of May would be an appropriate month to designate as Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome Awareness Month: Now, therefore, be it</text></whereas></preamble><resolution-body style="OLC" id="H2D0E350707CB4199A2D0ED70FB4A98A2"><section id="H62771414F3F6455395F0AF4C34183334" section-type="undesignated-section" display-inline="yes-display-inline"><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">That the House of Representatives—</text><paragraph id="H86AEF117E18C4C35A7B21D6463F01022"><enum>(1)</enum><text>supports the designation of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome Awareness Month;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H3F1B713BF0AD42BCB55B770EA1CA7431"><enum>(2)</enum><text>honors those bravely suffering from Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H91B2E7875E9044D389DEA52AEE9B3575"><enum>(3)</enum><text>encourages scientific research and funding to find a cure for Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome.</text></paragraph></section></resolution-body></resolution>
