Board of Education.</official-title></form><preamble><whereas><text>Whereas, on May 17, 1954, the Supreme Court of the United States delivered a unanimous opinion in Brown v. Board of Education, 347 U.S. 483 (1954), holding that—</text><paragraph id="id6058165c4cd44fb59ea482dcc0561eb1"><enum>(1)</enum><text>separate educational facilities are inherently unequal; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="ida62aa0df5a254d6fab32aa025d39aa92"><enum>(2)</enum><text>the <quote>separate but equal</quote> doctrine violated the 14th Amendment of the Constitution of the United States, which states that no citizen may be denied equal protection under the law;</text></paragraph></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, in a second opinion issued on May 31, 1955, the Supreme Court of the United States decreed that schools should be desegregated <quote>with all deliberate speed</quote>;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, on September 6, 1955, Oak Ridge High School and Robertsville Junior High, located in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, became the first public schools in the Southeast region to implement the ruling of the Supreme Court of the United States in Brown v. Board of Education; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H287E3038338A4990A233C9773457C547"><enum>(2)</enum><text>the role of the Scarboro 85 in leading the desegregation movement in the Southeast region.</text></paragraph></section></resolution-body></resolution>
