R. 9436</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES</current-chamber><action display="yes"><action-date date="20240830">August 30, 2024</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="K000389">Mr. Khanna</sponsor> (for himself, <cosponsor name-id="T000478">Ms. Tenney</cosponsor>, and <cosponsor name-id="F000466">Mr. Fitzpatrick</cosponsor>) introduced the following bill; which was referred to the <committee-name committee-id="HSY00">Committee on Science, Space, and Technology</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>A BILL</legis-type><official-title display="yes">To establish a National Science Foundation grant program to provide and strengthen opportunities for peer-led research regarding autism spectrum disorder and its characteristics in women, and for other purposes.</official-title></form><legis-body id="H032A70B90D6948C98CEA94CCFAC0CA4A" style="OLC"><section id="H13881F4C003F4C69B06699968563D3EB" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Supporting Peer-led Efforts to Conduct Thoughtful Research and Understand the Modalities of Autism in Women and Girls Act</short-title></quote> or the <quote><short-title>SPECTRUM Act</short-title></quote>.</text></section><section id="HACDFF6A0BCD64AB996643E68A83A5E80"><enum>2.</enum><header>National Science Foundation grant program to strengthen opportunities for peer-led research regarding autism spectrum disorder</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">The Director of the National Science Foundation is authorized to award grants on a competitive basis to support participatory research approaches into autism, including with respect to women and girls. Such research may include research into any of the following: </text><paragraph id="HDD83FD677A2D428AB04059CA47394653"><enum>(1)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Characteristics of autism in girls and women, including the incidence of <quote>masking</quote>, <quote>camouflaging</quote>, or other psychosocial factors.</text></paragraph><paragraph id="HF22DAFB64A52491CB6E036731940E8F6"><enum>(2)</enum><text>Communication between autistic and neurotypical women and girls, and the phenomenon of the <quote>double empathy problem</quote> theory.</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H0D64617DACE54744B3472C4CF41776DC"><enum>(3)</enum><text>Additional related topics at the discretion of the Director.</text></paragraph></section></legis-body></bill>
