R. 9143</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES</current-chamber><action display="yes"><action-date date="20240725">July 25, 2024</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="F000471">Mr. Fitzgerald</sponsor> (for himself, <cosponsor name-id="T000165">Mr. Tiffany</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="V000135">Mr. Van Orden</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="T000478">Ms. Tenney</cosponsor>, and <cosponsor name-id="R000612">Mr. Rose</cosponsor>) introduced the following bill; which was referred to the <committee-name committee-id="HWM00">Committee on Ways and Means</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>A BILL</legis-type><official-title display="yes">To amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to prohibit 501(c)(3) organizations from providing direct funding to State attorneys general.</official-title></form><legis-body id="H36E0F4837B224E30A2EE9771F084D598" style="OLC"><section id="H29E92463C70846FBA0A867F829DFDB62" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Ensuring State Attorney General Accountability Act</short-title></quote>. </text></section><section id="HF836C3E97DFB4EA6B1EBF94B72262895"><enum>2.</enum><header>501(<enum-in-header>c</enum-in-header>)(3) organizations prohibited from providing direct funding to State attorneys general</header><subsection id="HEA18ED39278B4E87B5F22966C5627C13"><enum>(a)</enum><header>In general</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline"><external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/26/501">Section 501(c)(3)</external-xref> of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 is amended—</text><paragraph id="HB5AA3AA1474F4A58A04FCBF05B5B25B6"><enum>(1)</enum><text>by striking <quote>and which does not participate</quote> and inserting <quote>which does not participate</quote>, and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H2E635EEDE9614D66A7AA25649F6114BA"><enum>(2)</enum><text>by striking the period at the end and inserting <quote>, and which does not provide direct funding to any attorney general of a State for the purpose of a lawsuit, investigation, or remuneration of personnel.</quote>. </text></paragraph></subsection><subsection id="HCC9BE4CC74904EE8893A97232D184BE1"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Effective date</header><text>The amendments made by this subsection shall apply to funding provided in taxable years beginning after December 31, 2024. </text></subsection></section></legis-body></bill>
