R. 898</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES</current-chamber><action display="yes"><action-date date="20230209">February 9, 2023</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="C001051">Mr. Carter of Texas</sponsor> introduced the following bill; which was referred to the <committee-name committee-id="HJU00">Committee on the Judiciary</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>A BILL</legis-type><official-title display="yes">To amend the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968 to authorize COPS grantees to use grant funds for recruitment and retention of law enforcement officers.</official-title></form><legis-body id="H75BC54E71CC64384AA0D951A61BF1D5F" style="OLC"><section id="HE304DE5924B44C5A96E977DBAD606F8B" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Recruit and Retain Act of 2023</short-title></quote>.</text></section><section id="H2DF7777185054BD3B85B726DBDCE5F9B"><enum>2.</enum><header>Use of COPS grant funds for recruitment and retention of law enforcement officers</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">Section 1701(b) of part Q of title I of the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968 (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/34/10381">34 U.S.C. 10381(b)</external-xref>) is amended—</text><paragraph id="HE9076199C73D4CB3B87E41C755F1667A"><enum>(1)</enum><text>by redesignating paragraphs (3) through (23) as paragraphs (4) through (24); and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H730CC8F1BC58496EA9C541B616D80314"><enum>(2)</enum><text>by inserting after paragraph (2) the following: </text><quoted-block style="OLC" id="H6027FDA41421499A9853AE4FAB89F034" display-inline="no-display-inline"><paragraph id="HEDEB731CC8634A26B4459A28D2CDD76A"><enum>(3)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">to recruit and retain career law enforcement officers for deployment in community-oriented policing across the Nation; </text></paragraph><after-quoted-block>.</after-quoted-block></quoted-block></paragraph></section></legis-body></bill>
