R. 8805</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES</current-chamber><action display="yes"><action-date date="20240621">June 21, 2024</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="N000147">Ms. Norton</sponsor> introduced the following bill; which was referred to the <committee-name committee-id="HVR00">Committee on Veterans' Affairs</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>A BILL</legis-type><official-title display="yes">To authorize the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to provide support to university law school programs that are designed to provide legal assistance to veterans, and for other purposes.</official-title></form><legis-body id="H5069426AAA0444EEB5F88359A391FD15"><section id="H04F2B51E8BC74FA88B84C8CD293E0B40" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Veterans Legal Support Act of 2024</short-title></quote>.</text></section><section id="HD1964561FF294168A2806DDEC3B604D0"><enum>2.</enum><header>Department of veterans affairs support for university legal clinics that assist veterans</header><subsection id="H90D1914B520441AF89939001E2F827BB"><enum>(a)</enum><header>Support authorized</header><text>The Secretary of Veterans Affairs may provide support to one or more university law school programs that are designed to provide legal assistance to veterans.</text></subsection><subsection id="HCC70E8D8033445A5A178047C008CB31F"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Eligible programs</header><text>Programs of university law schools which may receive support under subsection (a) may include programs that assist veterans with—</text><paragraph id="HB0A02D46F1FE4F8F8E0B2DCC4AA0B0B1"><enum>(1)</enum><text>representing veterans in appeals and proceedings before the Department of Veterans Affairs related to the appointment of fiduciaries;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H2A94FBECA9C842FABA7A07CA00A244AA"><enum>(2)</enum><text>filing and appealing claims for benefits under laws administered by the Secretary; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="HAC2E90BFB7AA4EBFA1C1B7F708D8EDD1"><enum>(3)</enum><text>such other civil, criminal, and family legal matters as the Secretary considers appropriate.</text></paragraph></subsection><subsection id="HD823794EEE4B440E9484B5F6688EC7C2"><enum>(c)</enum><header>Authorization of appropriations</header><text>There is authorized to be appropriated to carry out this section $10,000,000 for each of fiscal years 2025 through 2029.</text></subsection></section></legis-body></bill>
