R. 6280</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES</current-chamber><action display="yes"><action-date date="20231107">November 7, 2023</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="V000136">Mr. Vasquez</sponsor> (for himself, <cosponsor name-id="C001119">Ms. Craig</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="V000130">Mr. Vargas</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S001226">Ms. Salinas</cosponsor>, and <cosponsor name-id="C001134">Ms. Caraveo</cosponsor>) introduced the following bill; which was referred to the <committee-name committee-id="HHM00">Committee on Homeland Security</committee-name>, and in addition to the Committees on <committee-name committee-id="HAG00">Agriculture</committee-name>, <committee-name committee-id="HWM00">Ways and Means</committee-name>, and <committee-name committee-id="HPW00">Transportation and Infrastructure</committee-name>, for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker, in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned</action-desc></action><legis-type>A BILL</legis-type><official-title display="yes">To authorize additional appropriations for certain U.S. Customs and Border Protection operations, and for other purposes.</official-title></form><legis-body id="H18FF8EF43CE944EC98C1B5986CAAA571" style="OLC"><section id="HBFBCF340ADE34AE6A41244D2E022054D" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Smart Border Protection Act</short-title></quote>. </text></section><section id="H3991DC6DD3464A7490590FCE9F65FEC0"><enum>2.</enum><header>Additional funding for certain U.S. Customs and Border Protection operations</header><subsection id="H3521219BD2ED499BA87B88E9DC2A2896"><enum>(a)</enum><header>Hiring</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">There is authorized to be appropriated to the Secretary of Homeland Security $300,000,000 to hire personnel for U.S. Customs and Border Protection operations at ports of entry, including agents, processing assistants, technicians, agriculture specialists, and import specialists.</text></subsection><subsection id="H94F3276BF9964329B31A86D674CD4030"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Screening</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">There is authorized to be appropriated to the Secretary of Homeland Security $200,000,000 to procure, deploy, install, maintain, and operate screening technology at U.S. Customs and Border Protection ports of entry, such as non-intrusive inspection technology to inspect and detect cargo for illicit materials, such as fentanyl.</text></subsection><subsection id="H9F07854F40004D62B31924CE7F8D999F"><enum>(c)</enum><header>Infrastructure</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">There is authorized to be appropriated to the Administrator of General Services $70,000,000 for port of entry infrastructure, including port of entry building infrastructure improvements, vehicle inspection lane expansion or improvements, pedestrian pathway and lane expansion or improvements, and modernization within ports of entry.</text></subsection><subsection id="H1AE199931E4A4D679457F57B7CD28303"><enum>(d)</enum><header>Availability</header><text>Amounts authorized to be appropriated for the purposes described in this section—</text><paragraph id="HD763C8C0751E4D09AD38114D9A7D0CE6"><enum>(1)</enum><text>shall be expended by not later than one year after the date of the enactment of this section; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H6DE432DF60E44D03B1282191233275E9"><enum>(2)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">are in addition to amounts otherwise made available to the Secretary of Homeland Security or to the Administrator of General Services.</text></paragraph></subsection></section></legis-body></bill>
