which was referred to the <committee-name committee-id="HAS00">Committee on Armed Services</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>A BILL</legis-type><official-title display="yes">To amend title 10, United States Code, to screen and register individuals with health conditions resulting from unsafe housing units.</official-title></form><legis-body id="H41A4ADBE66844272A1F72863345D0275" style="OLC"><section id="HD0B82E9C8939449A808502AEE1CD65A4" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Healthy Servicemembers Act</short-title></quote>.</text></section><section id="H191C71DF24FA48AFBA029AD6F79525FA"><enum>2.</enum><header>Screening and registry of individuals with health conditions resulting from unsafe housing units</header><subsection id="H04C62A25BC164E6B83D9A54EC48D0FF9"><enum>(a)</enum><header>In general</header><text>Subchapter V of <external-xref legal-doc="usc-chapter" parsable-cite="usc-chapter/10/169">chapter 169</external-xref> of title 10, United States Code, is amended by adding at the end the following new section:</text><quoted-block style="USC" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="H28A16CA1A03D456E9B8EC4CE3C3383D3"><section id="H12DC302EB18844FFAE06141157228389"><enum>2895.</enum><header>Screening and registry of individuals with health conditions resulting from unsafe housing units</header><subsection id="HAF2F2F6ABF7B437982E4D1E2D58F3EF3"><enum>(a)</enum><header>Screening</header><paragraph id="H83F9984FBA1843F8901037350AE4CD92"><enum>(1)</enum><header>In general</header><text>The Secretary of Defense, in consultation with appropriate scientific agencies as determined by the Secretary, shall ensure that all military medical treatment facilities screen eligible individuals for covered conditions.</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H69D98EF418784E75B2CBCE1EBB4EA754"><enum>(2)</enum><header>Establishment of procedures</header><text>The Secretary may establish procedures through which screening under paragraph (1) may allow an eligible individual to be included in the registry under subsection (b).</text></paragraph></subsection><subsection id="H108E13B63B5548C9B6E913CCBC038BCC"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Registry</header><paragraph id="HC67A0F45645F4FC08E477AE7D9CB3FDC"><enum>(1)</enum><header>In general</header><text>The Secretary of Defense shall establish and maintain a registry of eligible individuals who have a covered condition.</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H363E7E358CBB4D69889B6DBCD9D80A26"><enum>(2)</enum><header>Inclusion of information</header><text>The Secretary shall include any information in the registry under paragraph (1) that the Secretary determines necessary to ascertain and monitor the health of eligible individuals and the connection between the health of such individuals and an unsafe housing unit.</text></paragraph><paragraph id="HE6C414494817486FB6042EB48537588C"><enum>(3)</enum><header>Public information campaign</header><text>The Secretary shall develop a public information campaign to inform eligible individuals about the registry under paragraph (1), including how to register and the benefits of registering.</text></paragraph></subsection><subsection id="HAC93F80ABC7A4A5D8BD12AB36E4EDAF3"><enum>(c)</enum><header>Definitions</header><text>In this section:</text><paragraph id="H2E495625EC114681B3FFD6693352A418"><enum>(1)</enum><text>The term <term>covered condition</term> means a medical condition that is determined by the Secretary of Defense to have resulted from residing in an unsafe housing unit.</text></paragraph><paragraph id="HBDD91A017E9543A0A17A0C5C619C6508" commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline"><enum>(2)</enum><text>The term <term>eligible individual</term> means a member of the armed forces or a family member of a member of the armed forces who has resided in an unsafe housing unit.</text></paragraph><paragraph id="HDC868CAE5EF74530B358D8D4DD03D2AA"><enum>(3)</enum><text>The term <term>unsafe housing unit</term> means a dwelling unit that—</text><subparagraph id="H222C6B209AD947EF9A8817BEB2009CC5"><enum>(A)</enum><text>does not meet the housing quality standards established under section 8(o)(8)(B) of the United States Housing Act of 1937 (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/42/1437f">42 U.S.C. 1437f(o)(8)(B)</external-xref>); or</text></subparagraph><subparagraph id="HE4E7C02D9D694ABCA014B54A8B0E3751"><enum>(B)</enum><text>is not free from dangerous air pollution levels from mold.</text></subparagraph></paragraph></subsection></section><after-quoted-block>.</after-quoted-block></quoted-block></subsection><subsection id="H04B3B03DD2C24EFC814C593FEB08640D"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Clerical amendment</header><text>The table of sections at the beginning of such subchapter is amended by inserting after the item relating to section 2894a the following new item:</text><quoted-block style="USC" id="HF3EE556EE6CB40CC8554AB3CCC80B528"><toc><toc-entry level="section" idref="H12DC302EB18844FFAE06141157228389">2895. Screening and registry of individuals with health conditions resulting from unsafe housing units.</toc-entry></toc><after-quoted-block>.</after-quoted-block></quoted-block></subsection></section></legis-body></bill>
