R. 4805</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES</current-chamber><action display="yes"><action-date date="20230720">July 20, 2023</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="S001222">Mr. Santos</sponsor> introduced the following bill; which was referred to the <committee-name committee-id="HAG00">Committee on Agriculture</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>A BILL</legis-type><official-title display="yes">To prohibit the use of Federal funds to support lab-grown meat, and for other purposes.</official-title></form><legis-body id="H2F71CEC28BE0482295DC043D507F55B8" style="OLC"><section id="HE8A3E77EB6D44D23BFA00366879EC4DC" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>American Meat Industry Protection Act of 2023</short-title></quote>. </text></section><section id="H5323AA9E9095415BB9A4E275FB26DEC2"><enum>2.</enum><header>No Federal funds supporting lab-grown meat</header><subsection id="HCC79BB63ACA54CBC9AEBA71AF59ED3AA"><enum>(a)</enum><header>In general</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">No Federal funds may be used to support, directly or indirectly, the production, advancement, or enhancement of lab-grown meat, including through—</text><paragraph id="HBE1C04257CB54141AC11B8452E5BD3D5"><enum>(1)</enum><text>conducting or supporting research on lab-grown meat;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H1DAA9344273E47F7AB7A559C00BDCE55"><enum>(2)</enum><text>supporting meatpacking plants, organizations, or groups relating to lab-grown meat; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H7B349A3BFCD54DD68F5794DB81B4616C"><enum>(3)</enum><text>excluding from the receipt of any assistance or other benefit under a program administered by the Secretary of Agriculture any farm, ranch, producer, or other entity that produces lab-grown meat.</text></paragraph></subsection><subsection id="H97D5C3083DBB44E88CE8D58A811DA128"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Lab-Grown meat defined</header><text>In this section, the term <quote>lab-grown meat</quote> means meat sourced from cells of animals and artificially produced in a laboratory.</text></subsection></section></legis-body></bill>
