which was referred to the <committee-name committee-id="HJU00">Committee on the Judiciary</committee-name></action-desc></action><action display="yes"><action-date date="20230515">May 15, 2023</action-date><action-desc>Additional sponsors: <cosponsor name-id="S001196">Ms. Stefanik</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="N000190">Mr. Norman</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="T000478">Ms. Tenney</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="R000610">Mr. Reschenthaler</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="D000632">Mr. D'Esposito</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="L000589">Mrs. Lesko</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="G000596">Ms. Greene of Georgia</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="V000134">Ms. Van Duyne</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="L000598">Mr. LaLota</cosponsor>, and <cosponsor name-id="E000246">Mr. Edwards</cosponsor></action-desc></action><action display="yes"><action-date date="20230515">May 15, 2023</action-date><action-desc>Reported with an amendment, committed to the Committee of the Whole House on the State of the Union, and ordered to be printed</action-desc><action-instruction>Strike out all after the enacting clause and insert the part printed in italic</action-instruction><action-instruction>For text of introduced bill, see copy of bill as introduced on April 6, 2023</action-instruction></action><action><action-desc><pagebreak></pagebreak></action-desc></action><legis-type>A BILL</legis-type><official-title display="yes">To make the assault of a law enforcement officer a deportable offense, and for other purposes.<pagebreak></pagebreak></official-title></form><legis-body display-enacting-clause="yes-display-enacting-clause" changed="added" style="OLC" committee-id="HJU00" reported-display-style="italic" id="HBB204735749F419B8C97BABD2F274CA9"><section id="H381767748F60405E852445319BE1BAC1" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Protect Our Law enforcement with Immigration Control and Enforcement Act of 2023</short-title></quote> or the <quote><short-title>POLICE Act of 2023</short-title></quote>.</text></section><section id="H5571A4822C844366A2F660E771BE3421"><enum>2.</enum><header>Assault of law enforcement officer</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">Section 237(a)(2) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/8/1227">8 U.S.C. 1227(a)(2)</external-xref>) is amended by adding at the end the following:</text><quoted-block style="OLC" id="HD69668F56B5242AB95A4DB6FFBDBDD91" display-inline="no-display-inline" changed="added" reported-display-style="italic" committee-id="HJU00"><subparagraph id="H4AA659747A8C4570849A38A438DB8F27"><enum>(G)</enum><header>Assault of law enforcement officer</header><clause id="H6849B54DF8F44FCB90DD581C594237E1"><enum>(i)</enum><header>In general</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Any alien who has been convicted of, who admits having committed, or who admits committing acts which constitute the essential elements of, any offense involving assault of a law enforcement officer is deportable. </text></clause><clause id="H288EE22BE8294378AF73FA592FE8E013"><enum>(ii)</enum><header>Circumstances</header><text>The circumstances referred to in clause (i) are that the law enforcement officer was assaulted—</text><subclause id="H1111F9F9ACC2435FAC7980E812FEB8E1"><enum>(I)</enum><text>while he or she was engaged in the performance of his or her official duties;</text></subclause><subclause id="H480958A8FB6C455DB3C7AF490B7C1E7E"><enum>(II)</enum><text>because of the performance of his or her official duties; or</text></subclause><subclause id="HE76C01A951814FB98C15C4A04889AF52"><enum>(III)</enum><text>because of his or her status as a law enforcement officer.</text></subclause></clause><clause id="H83A7EA7C885E46F58BD1410AA6DE3780"><enum>(iii)</enum><header>Definitions</header><text>In this subparagraph—</text><subclause id="HDA89666A331B4712815D1C8DA8223039"><enum>(I)</enum><text>the term <quote>assault</quote> has the meaning given that term in the jurisdiction where the act occurred; and</text></subclause><subclause id="HCB862780BB0C45CCBA4A5DD74BC296DF"><enum>(II)</enum><text>the term <quote>law enforcement officer</quote> is a person authorized by law—</text><item id="HAF5FD518FC5A448E9DA3A88B2F26D6AA"><enum>(aa)</enum><text>to apprehend, arrest, or prosecute an individual for any criminal violation of law;
