which was considered and agreed to</action-desc></action><legis-type>RESOLUTION</legis-type><official-title display="yes">Expressing the sense of the Senate that violence and threats of violence against the employees of the Federal Bureau of Investigation are unacceptable and should be condemned.</official-title></form><preamble><whereas><text>Whereas, pursuant to a judicially issued warrant, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (referred to in this preamble as <quote>FBI</quote>) searched the residence of former President Donald Trump (referred to in this preamble as <quote>the former President</quote>)<italic></italic> on August 8, 2022, for classified and national defense information records owned by the United States (referred to in this preamble as <quote>the search</quote>);</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, in the days following the search, employees of the FBI and their families have been subjected to threats of violence;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the threats to employees of the FBI and their families have been inflamed by—</text><paragraph id="idDA61C5DD2E9841E0B0197C88DAAAF727"><enum>(1)</enum><text>calls from members of Congress to <quote>destroy the FBI</quote> or <quote>defund the FBI</quote>;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id71B9517E567E4DF090D3EB3F171DFAF6"><enum>(2)</enum><text>members of Congress comparing the execution of a lawful warrant by the FBI to the actions of the Nazi Gestapo; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="idF7D691418554487DB17FBDEAB02D233D"><enum>(3)</enum><text>repeated attacks from the former President, who has called FBI officials, among other insults, <quote>vicious monsters</quote>;</text></paragraph></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security issued an intelligence bulletin warning of a further increase in violent threats and acts of violence against Federal law enforcement officials and facilities following the search;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas these threats include placing a <quote>dirty bomb</quote> outside of FBI headquarters and calls for <quote>civil war</quote> and <quote>armed rebellion</quote>;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security have also <quote>observed the personal identifying information of possible targets of violence, such as home addresses and identification of family members, disseminated online as additional targets</quote>;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas a man wearing body armor and armed with an AR-15 rifle and nail gun attempted to breach the FBI Cincinnati Field Office on August 11, 2022;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas a man was indicted on August 16, 2022, for threatening to murder everyone at the FBI, from the Director, to agents, to the custodial staff;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas a man jumped a fence and threw rocks at the FBI Chicago Field Office on August 25, 2022;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the continued leveling of threats and baseless attacks against the FBI will increase the risk of injury or death that employees of the FBI face; and</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the employees of the FBI put their lives on the line every day to protect the communities of the United States and uphold the rule of law: Now, therefore, be it</text></whereas></preamble><resolution-body><section id="S1" display-inline="yes-display-inline" section-type="undesignated-section"><text>That the Senate—</text><paragraph id="id1eb74c2af7e248598540c51fab882e64"><enum>(1)</enum><text>condemns attacks and threats of violence against the employees of the Federal Bureau of Investigation;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="ide109930dfc31479d867cc483730d3ba2"><enum>(2)</enum><text>condemns calls from members of Congress to <quote>destroy the FBI</quote> and <quote>defund the FBI</quote>;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="idda415f587ea14ffda86b206158d3214c"><enum>(3)</enum><text>urges public officials at every level of government to reject and condemn political violence and the threat of political violence, regardless of its motivation;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id36ac35f2844d4f8184d710a86305f152"><enum>(4)</enum><text>honors the dedicated service of the employees of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, including their work executing lawful warrants; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="idac79f878755742d48dc20557bb2e7329"><enum>(5)</enum><text>affirms that a founding principle of the United States is that individuals settle differences through the political process, not through the use or threat of violence. </text></paragraph></section></resolution-body></resolution>
