which was referred to the <committee-name committee-id="SSHR00">Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>RESOLUTION</legis-type><official-title display="yes">Supporting the goals and ideals of Workers’ Memorial Day, honoring workers who have been killed or injured in the workplace, and recognizing the importance of strengthening worker health and safety protections.</official-title></form><preamble><whereas><text>Whereas 4,764 workers were killed in the United States due to job-related traumatic injuries in 2020, and 120,000 workers die in the United States each year from job-related diseases;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, each day, in total, an average of 340 workers die from job-related injuries and illnesses in the United States;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, annually, there are more than 3,200,000 occupational injuries in the United States;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas tens of thousands of individuals in the United States with workplace-related injuries or illnesses have become permanently disabled;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (referred to in this preamble as <quote>OSHA</quote>), the primary Federal agency that establishes and enforces workplace health and safety standards—</text><paragraph id="idD6F3D815169E403AB2AE8BB2C3296D87"><enum>(1)</enum><text>only has sufficient resources to inspect each establishment within the jurisdiction of OSHA once every 236 years; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id263A759300A947DA8D0BAB5F85B4FBFF"><enum>(2)</enum><text>must receive the resources necessary to adequately protect the health and safety of workers in the United States;</text></paragraph></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas workers continue to face serious risks of injury, illness and death from COVID-19, infectious diseases, heat exposure, and workplace violence;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas millions of workers have been infected with COVID-19, and thousands of workers in the United States alone have died from COVID-19; </text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas these injuries, illnesses, and deaths are preventable; and</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas observing Workers’ Memorial Day—</text><paragraph id="id360764D08338475C87AF01A3E6E4F69F"><enum>(1)</enum><text>allows the people of the United States to honor and remember victims of workplace-related injuries and disease; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="idFF16516BCB16431CA33BF1194D6E5BB7"><enum>(2)</enum><text>reminds the people of the United States to strive for better safety and health protections for workers: Now, therefore, be it</text></paragraph></whereas></preamble><resolution-body><section display-inline="yes-display-inline" id="S1" section-type="undesignated-section"><text>That the Senate—</text><paragraph id="id17ffdb77e27a43caafec121c2ce2ab6e"><enum>(1)</enum><text>supports the goals and ideals of Workers’ Memorial Day to honor and remember workers who have been killed or injured in the workplace;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="ide93755afab324b12a13e78876eea56dc"><enum>(2)</enum><text>recognizes the importance of strengthening worker health and safety standards to secure the safe workplaces workers deserve;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="idc5c75b37a70245d28ad4919b81b94034"><enum>(3)</enum><text>encourages the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the Mine Safety and Health Administration, employers, community and worker organizations, professional associations, and academic institutions to support activities increasing awareness of the importance of preventing illness, injury, and death in the workplace; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id9641f1425b1a4325a0d0278a5e257841"><enum>(4)</enum><text>calls upon the people of the United States to observe Workers' Memorial Day with appropriate ceremonies and respect.</text></paragraph></section></resolution-body></resolution>
