RES. 580</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES</current-chamber><action display="yes"><action-date date="20220406">April 6, 2022</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="S397">Mr. Braun</sponsor> (for himself and <cosponsor name-id="S391">Mr. Young</cosponsor>) submitted the following resolution; which was considered and agreed to</action-desc></action><legis-type>RESOLUTION</legis-type><official-title display="yes">Recognizing the 100th anniversary of the creation of the Purdue <quote>All-American</quote> Marching Band’s World's Largest Drum.</official-title></form><preamble><whereas><text>Whereas the World’s Largest Drum is a significant piece of the <quote>All-American</quote> Marching Band and an icon of Purdue University;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, in 1921, <quote>All-American</quote> Marching Band Director Paul Spotts Emrick commissioned the World’s Largest Drum from the Leedy Corporation of Indianapolis;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, in 1921, the World’s Largest Drum was the largest drum in existence and was displayed at the Indiana Statehouse and Indiana State Fair;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas it is a Purdue <quote>All-American</quote> Marching Band tradition to honor national leaders and heroes with the privilege to beat the World’s Largest Drum, with President Harry Truman, Gus Grissom, and Neil Armstrong being among those accepting the invitation; and</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the World’s Largest Drum is an essential element of the <quote>All-American</quote> Marching Band’s performances across Indiana, the United States, and the world: Now, therefore, be it</text></whereas></preamble><resolution-body><section id="S1" display-inline="yes-display-inline" section-type="undesignated-section"><text>That it is the sense of the Senate that—</text><paragraph id="id7237bc1c56ef4f6c812af9a4a4079298"><enum>(1)</enum><text>the Purdue <quote>All-American</quote> Marching Band, which is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the construction of the World’s Largest Drum, continues to remain an important cultural and historical icon of Purdue University and the State of Indiana;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id546701cc61cb490cbb6eb606126ab410"><enum>(2)</enum><text>the World’s Largest Drum deserves recognition for the continued legacies of excellence and discipline exhibited by the World’s Largest Drum crew and the Purdue <quote>All-American</quote> Marching Band; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="idc8adf890fe874cf58b1ce58ed21d86be"><enum>(3)</enum><text>continued admiration of the World’s Largest Drum exemplifies the spirit of ingenuity of the people of the United States to push the bounds of engineering and create new products. </text></paragraph></section></resolution-body></resolution>
