RES. 535</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES</current-chamber><action display="yes"><action-date date="20220303">March 3, 2022</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="S350">Mr. Rubio</sponsor> (for himself, <cosponsor name-id="S359">Mr. Heinrich</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S404">Mr. Scott of Florida</cosponsor>, and <cosponsor name-id="S413">Mr. Padilla</cosponsor>) submitted the following resolution; which was considered and agreed to</action-desc></action><legis-type>RESOLUTION</legis-type><official-title display="yes">Commemorating the 105th anniversary of the granting of United States citizenship to the people of Puerto Rico.</official-title></form><preamble><whereas><text>Whereas, since 1898, after the Spanish-American War and following the ratification of the Treaty of Paris, Puerto Rico has been a territory of the United States;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas Puerto Rico is located approximately 1,000 miles southeast of Florida;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, on this day, March 2, 1917, President Woodrow Wilson recognized and welcomed the people of Puerto Rico into the United States as citizens by signing into law the Jones-Shafroth Act;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the Jones-Shafroth Act separated the Government of Puerto Rico into executive, judicial, and legislative branches and endowed Puerto Ricans with a bill of rights;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, since that time, Puerto Ricans have worked diligently to make countless contributions to the national identity of the United States by sharing their rich culture and heritage;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, since that time, Puerto Ricans have proudly served in the nation's Armed Forces, protecting Americans domestically and abroad;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the people of Puerto Rico continue to occupy a place of distinction in the civic fabric and discourse of the United States; and</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the United States joins Puerto Ricans in celebration of the rights and responsibilities inherent in United States citizenship: Now, therefore, be it</text></whereas></preamble><resolution-body><section id="S1" display-inline="yes-display-inline" section-type="undesignated-section"><text>That the Senate—</text><paragraph id="id01d21d73226a4b72b2660ef4bb600b5b"><enum>(1)</enum><text>commemorates the 105th anniversary of the granting of United States citizenship to the people of Puerto Rico;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="idb1c5721538b54e7d84a9c37a6efc1fed"><enum>(2)</enum><text>encourages the people of the United States to observe and celebrate that anniversary; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id8a7946a78cc1450bb6df71e070dc3ed0"><enum>(3)</enum><text>honors the contributions made by, and celebrates, the people of Puerto Rico.</text></paragraph></section></resolution-body></resolution>
