which was considered and agreed to</action-desc></action><legis-type>RESOLUTION</legis-type><official-title display="yes">Relating to the death of the Honorable Adlai Ewing Stevenson III, former Senator for the State of Illinois.</official-title></form><preamble><whereas><text>Whereas Adlai Stevenson III was born on October 10, 1930, in Chicago, Illinois, and attended Milton Academy in Massachusetts;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, in 1952, Adlai Stevenson III was commissioned as a lieutenant in the Marine Corps, served in Korea, and was discharged from active duty in 1954;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas Adlai Stevenson III continued to serve in the Marine Reserves until 1961 and was discharged as a captain;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, in 1953, Adlai Stevenson III married Nancy Anderson and they raised 4 children together: Adlai IV, Lucy, Katherine, and Warwick;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas Adlai Stevenson III was the proud grandfather of 9 grandchildren;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, in 1965, Adlai Stevenson III began his several decades in public service as a tireless advocate for the people of Illinois, including serving as—</text><paragraph id="ida1b7024a7d8743a9b1623a6c4908129d"><enum>(1)</enum><text>a Member of the Illinois House of Representatives from 1965 to 1967;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id9ec976b9144a4433afa1b5b7004cc58e"><enum>(2)</enum><text>Illinois State Treasurer from 1967 to 1970; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="idf8c526c2cf334e108d8a75d7df4ace9e"><enum>(3)</enum><text>a Senator from Illinois from 1970 to 1981;</text></paragraph></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas Adlai Stevenson III, as Senator, served on—</text><paragraph id="id8f23abac9f86408bb2da0a4c899bde4e" commented="no"><enum>(1)</enum><text>the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id3ac33cf619d24c4ea224be781238015d" commented="no"><enum>(2)</enum><text>the Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="idb0b149948b5b4e1faa9109c665423f38" commented="no"><enum>(3)</enum><text>the Select Committee on Intelligence of the Senate;</text></paragraph></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas Adlai Stevenson III was chairman of —</text><paragraph id="ida3cb7d42f020450593d08a425fb6dce4"><enum>(1)</enum><text>the Subcommittee on Science, Technology, and Space;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id1dc146d82d374d138b391de9d41b17ee"><enum>(2)</enum><text>the Subcommittee on Oil and Gas Production;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id223979f1d3c94db4aaa9b903b86b2399"><enum>(3)</enum><text>the Subcommittee on International Finance;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="idba205b5b82b447dfb01e329ebd505489"><enum>(4)</enum><text>the Subcommittee on the Collection and Production of Intelligence; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id1a06530ebe4c4695973a20ea44350232"><enum>(5)</enum><text>a Special Committee, leading to the first major reorganization of the Senate;</text></paragraph></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas Adlai Stevenson III was the first chairman of the Select Committee on Ethics of the Senate;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas Adlai Stevenson III—</text><paragraph id="id3b7360fbf66a482d9df0fb3b218fa295"><enum>(1)</enum><text>introduced 84 bills in 2 years as a Member of the Illinois House of Representatives, including measures to control lobbying and conflicts of interest in government, a graduated State income tax, and credit reforms;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id3bacaf03383b4d59824df0f2a4670d64"><enum>(2)</enum><text>as Illinois State Treasurer—</text><subparagraph id="idDA7D75F79E904E8192975161AEEFBDBE"><enum>(A)</enum><text>eliminated staff patronage; </text></subparagraph><subparagraph id="id6F6AF81248DE4DFAA7A81CD15C1FD60F"><enum>(B)</enum><text>withdrew State funds from banks that practiced racial or religious discrimination; and </text></subparagraph><subparagraph id="idD13273CE0AA441EC80B4F2E3372B8996"><enum>(C)</enum><text>put money in Black-owned banks to finance small business, low-income housing, and urban development;</text></subparagraph></paragraph><paragraph id="iddac6ce032a684e7a8de213d2a6e62314"><enum>(3)</enum><text>as Senator, co-authored energy legislation, including the establishment of the Department of Energy, fuel efficiency standards, emergency natural gas pricing, and projects for the development of alternative energy sources; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="idd99995d644d54144b1c3e037d3d34fc7"><enum>(4)</enum><text>conducted the first in-depth congressional studies of terrorism and introduced the Comprehensive Anti-Terrorism Act of 1979;</text></paragraph></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the family of Adlai Stevenson III is one that is devoted to public service, including—</text><paragraph id="idb2bc34b44a80436eb344c8ee9f53f57d"><enum>(1)</enum><text>his great-great grandfather Jesse W. Fell helped convince Abraham Lincoln to run for president;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id9660e331fccd461e9beeff6c961d878d"><enum>(2)</enum><text>his great-grandfather Adlai Stevenson I was a Member of the House of Representatives from 1875 to 1877 and 1879 to 1881 and was President Grover Cleveland’s Vice President in his second term from 1893 to 1897;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="idfb81721b3f7e4d49bdb9aa45abb9af5b"><enum>(3)</enum><text>his grandfather Lewis Stevenson was the 23rd Secretary of State of Illinois from 1914 to 1917; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id5c93816ab7484a768bf0b84cc9923d4e"><enum>(4)</enum><text>his father Adlai Stevenson II was the 31st Governor of Illinois, 2-time Democratic Party presidential nominee, and the 5th Ambassador to the United Nations;</text></paragraph></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas Adlai Stevenson III was a 2-time nominee for Governor of Illinois;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, following his retirement from the Senate, Adlai Stevenson III returned to private practice in Illinois and was Chairman of the SC&amp;M Investment Management Company and the Adlai Stevenson Center on Democracy;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, throughout his career, Adlai Stevenson III focused on international issues, especially in finance and East Asia as he held many positions in non-profits in this area; </text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas Adlai Stevenson III was co-chairman of the HuaMei Capital Company, the first Chinese-American investment bank; and</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas Adlai Stevenson III will be remembered as an honorable and honest public servant, with an intellect that made his family’s legacy proud and placed an emphasis on policies for the future: Now, therefore, be it</text></whereas></preamble><resolution-body><section id="S1" display-inline="yes-display-inline" section-type="undesignated-section"><text>That the Senate—</text><paragraph id="id501b240fd5904f57b4d1e36b8d25b8a9"><enum>(1)</enum><text>has heard with profound sorrow and deep regret the announcement of the death of the Honorable Adlai Stevenson III, former Senator for the State of Illinois;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id264a80c7dbff480282afd44cfe7004a6"><enum>(2)</enum><text>extends heartfelt condolences to his wonderful spouse, Nancy, and the entire family of the Honorable Adlai Stevenson III and all those who knew and loved him;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id483289564d044735b7860f1b5deb1791"><enum>(3)</enum><text>respectfully requests that the Secretary of the Senate—</text><subparagraph id="id5540edcdd3944070a7d5566a5d5c4ece"><enum>(A)</enum><text>communicate this resolution to the House of Representatives; and</text></subparagraph><subparagraph id="id9a99cecc8b764bc39744cb185fa06492"><enum>(B)</enum><text>transmit an enrolled copy of this resolution to the family of the Honorable Adlai Stevenson III; and</text></subparagraph></paragraph><paragraph id="id3ea9324f2dba4891b591cda5e1b4704b"><enum>(4)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">when the Senate adjourns today, it stand adjourned as a further mark of respect to the memory of the Honorable Adlai Stevenson III. </text></paragraph></section></resolution-body></resolution>
