RES. 248</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES</current-chamber><action display="yes"><action-date date="20210527">May 27, 2021</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="S407">Mr. Hagerty</sponsor> (for himself and <cosponsor name-id="S396">Mrs. Blackburn</cosponsor>) submitted the following resolution; which was referred to the <committee-name committee-id="SSJU00">Committee on the Judiciary</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>RESOLUTION</legis-type><official-title display="yes">Recognizing and celebrating the 225th anniversary of the entry of the State of Tennessee into the United States as the 16th State.</official-title></form><preamble><whereas><text>Whereas, on June 1, 1796, Congress created the State of Tennessee from the <quote>Territory of the United States South of the River Ohio</quote>, or more commonly known as the Southwest Territory;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the State of Tennessee earned the nickname <quote>The Volunteer State</quote> after the involvement of the State in the War of 1812, when many Tennesseans volunteered for the war effort and General Andrew Jackson led troops from the State to victory in the Battle of New Orleans;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the motto of the State of Tennessee, officially adopted by the State in 1987, is <quote>Agriculture and Commerce</quote>, which is taken from the wording used on the State seal;</text></whereas><whereas commented="no"><text>Whereas the State of Tennessee is naturally divided into 3 grand divisions, which include—</text><paragraph id="id3B43FEBCC0754249A681FC4CC27CF405" commented="no"><enum>(1)</enum><text>the Blue Ridge Mountains of east Tennessee;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id3A225F5CE36A411BADBB2C59F573AE74" commented="no"><enum>(2)</enum><text>the Cumberland Plateau and the foothills and basin of middle Tennessee; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id1AFFF6E0DFED4298A353F3FA591E382C" commented="no"><enum>(3)</enum><text>the low plains of west Tennessee;</text></paragraph></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the official flag of the State of Tennessee, which was adopted by the General Assembly on April 17, 1905, contains 3 pure white stars representing the 3 grand divisions of the State bound together by a circle of blue symbolizing the <quote>indissoluble trinity</quote>;</text></whereas><whereas commented="no"><text>Whereas the State of Tennessee has produced 3 presidents of the United States, including—</text><paragraph id="id3706F72343B0402BA904F707D371C569" commented="no"><enum>(1)</enum><text>Andrew Jackson;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="idD326CF17E2D44D549F71D6D7C7086890" commented="no"><enum>(2)</enum><text>James K. Polk; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id9C83FD785B6F484DA602631CC03A31E0" commented="no"><enum>(3)</enum><text>Andrew Johnson;</text></paragraph></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, over the years, the State of Tennessee has become a cultural, diverse, and vibrant State that celebrates its bright past through agriculture, music, art, food, faith, historical attractions, nature, and its people;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, on August 18, 1920, the State of Tennessee became the 36th and final State necessary to ratify the 19th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, which gave women the right to vote;</text></whereas><whereas commented="no"><text>Whereas, from Mountain City to Memphis, the State of Tennessee pioneered many musical genres, including—</text><paragraph id="id3C91F005425F413398B06775B4E4BC9D" commented="no"><enum>(1)</enum><text>bluegrass;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id3E18B7397CB542F5B488450AA41DEDE0" commented="no"><enum>(2)</enum><text>country;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id01683F60ED1B421E80F6C52F304145D2" commented="no"><enum>(3)</enum><text>blues;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id5050027BB4F844C9868F973E2E0B8380" commented="no"><enum>(4)</enum><text>gospel; and </text></paragraph><paragraph id="idF6A971A13D844CB5ABC2027E915A6CD8" commented="no"><enum>(5)</enum><text>rock and roll;</text></paragraph></whereas><whereas commented="no"><text>Whereas the State of Tennessee produces products known around the world, including—</text><paragraph id="idFA52BB2B72A24B7887663ACA8A3A9635" commented="no"><enum>(1)</enum><text>Tennessee whiskey;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id8F0ACC1B2FA3456A80AEFC9A31C829DA" commented="no"><enum>(2)</enum><text>hot chicken; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="idE1F4535959C94CF590656EE47BC5F364" commented="no"><enum>(3)</enum><text>Tennessee barbecue;</text></paragraph></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas June 1, 2021, marks the 225th anniversary of the attainment of statehood by the State of Tennessee; and</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas this 225th anniversary is a monumental occasion to rejoice and commemorate the achievements of the great State of Tennessee: Now, therefore, be it </text></whereas></preamble><resolution-body><section id="S1" display-inline="yes-display-inline" section-type="undesignated-section"><text>That the Senate recognizes and celebrates the 225th anniversary of the entry of the State of Tennessee into the United States as the 16th State.</text></section></resolution-body></resolution>
