which was referred to the <committee-name committee-id="SSJU00">Committee on the Judiciary</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>RESOLUTION</legis-type><official-title display="yes">Expressing support for the designation of June 4, 2021, as <quote>National Gun Violence Awareness Day</quote> and June 2021 as <quote>National Gun Violence Awareness Month</quote>. </official-title></form><preamble><whereas><text>Whereas, each year in the United States, more than—</text><paragraph id="HD32CFB9D33174BC48DA9F8F4D3F7B07A"><enum>(1)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">38,500 individuals are killed and 85,000 individuals are wounded by gunfire; </text></paragraph><paragraph id="H198B12245B814CD59416D444793C99EA"><enum>(2)</enum><text>14,000 individuals are killed in homicides involving guns; </text></paragraph><paragraph id="HB7A9D8DF73574B8097EBFA9AE7040C8B"><enum>(3)</enum><text>23,000 individuals die by suicide using a gun; and </text></paragraph><paragraph id="HCAA474196F12477BAF309EC268683A2E"><enum>(4)</enum><text>480 individuals are killed in unintentional shootings;</text></paragraph></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, since 1968, more individuals have died from guns in the United States than have died on the battlefields of all the wars in the history of the United States;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas 2020 was one of the deadliest years on record for the United States, with an estimated 19,300 individuals killed in gun homicides or nonsuicide-related shootings, a 25-percent increase over 2019;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas unintentional shooting deaths by children increased by nearly <fraction>1/3</fraction>, comparing incidents in March to December of 2020 to the same months in 2019;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, by 1 count, in 2020 in the United States, there were 610 mass shooting incidents in which at least 4 individuals were killed or wounded by gunfire;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, every year in the United States, more than 3,000 children and teens are killed by gun violence and 15,000 children and teens are shot and wounded;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas approximately 8,800 individuals in the United States under the age of 25 die because of gun violence annually, including Hadiya Pendleton, who, in 2013, was killed at 15 years of age in Chicago, Illinois, while standing in a park; </text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, on June 4, 2021, to recognize the 24th birthday of Hadiya Pendleton (born June 2, 1997), individuals across the United States will recognize National Gun Violence Awareness Day and wear orange in tribute to—</text><paragraph id="H2943036D89CF431FA99A06B4DFC971C8"><enum>(1)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Hadiya Pendleton and other victims of gun violence; and </text></paragraph><paragraph id="H6E95C829837A4629ABCA803CE6D7004C"><enum>(2)</enum><text>the loved ones of those victims; and</text></paragraph></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas June 2021 is an appropriate month to designate as <quote>National Gun Violence Awareness Month</quote>: Now, therefore, be it </text></whereas></preamble><resolution-body style="traditional" id="HABF11EA511194B73ACA70679F3AB4EE0"><section display-inline="yes-display-inline" section-type="undesignated-section" id="H242B111274C8404580CA30ECC9F1B213"><enum/><text>That the Senate—</text><paragraph id="H728E0A2A68D848809A7CE13728B03676"><enum>(1)</enum><text>supports—</text><subparagraph id="H783749EFCBAF48EA986F74F01C62FFB3"><enum>(A)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">the designation of <quote>National Gun Violence Awareness Month</quote> and the goals and ideals of that month; and </text></subparagraph><subparagraph id="HAE9AFADD5FEB4652BD4DA9B7AD954B16"><enum>(B)</enum><text>the designation of <quote>National Gun Violence Awareness Day</quote>, in remembrance of the victims of gun violence; and</text></subparagraph></paragraph><paragraph id="H80B2B422E98749B6812273A435E2CCA3"><enum>(2)</enum><text>calls on the people of the United States to—</text><subparagraph id="HD9FF194397B34FD3AEE63166225BFDBD"><enum>(A)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">promote greater awareness of gun violence and gun safety; </text></subparagraph><subparagraph id="H111609A945B14A5682A2DCEE1C904AE6"><enum>(B)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">wear orange, the color that hunters wear to show that they are not targets, on <quote>National Gun Violence Awareness Day</quote>; </text></subparagraph><subparagraph id="H4E3CDC9E8EB34227A3D3E4F91AED24C6"><enum>(C)</enum><text>concentrate heightened attention on gun violence during the summer months, when gun violence typically increases; and </text></subparagraph><subparagraph id="H07BBE060A3E64BB3BE6A4259C5B139F2"><enum>(D)</enum><text>bring community members and leaders together to discuss ways to make communities safer.</text></subparagraph></paragraph></section></resolution-body></resolution>
