RES. 232</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES</current-chamber><action display="yes"><action-date date="20210525">May 25, 2021</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="S399">Mr. Hawley</sponsor> (for himself, <cosponsor name-id="S389">Mr. Kennedy</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S404">Mr. Scott of Florida</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S411">Mr. Marshall</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S355">Mr. Cruz</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S376">Ms. Ernst</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S397">Mr. Braun</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S375">Mr. Daines</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S384">Mr. Tillis</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S398">Mr. Cramer</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S396">Mrs. Blackburn</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S266">Mr. Crapo</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S350">Mr. Rubio</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S373">Mr. Cassidy</cosponsor>, and <cosponsor name-id="S407">Mr. Hagerty</cosponsor>) submitted the following resolution; which was referred to the <committee-name committee-id="SSJU00">Committee on the Judiciary</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>RESOLUTION</legis-type><official-title display="yes">Expressing the sense of the Senate that acts of violence against Jewish people in the United States and around the world and the poisonous rhetoric from politicians and others promoted by the media that has helped inspire such violence is condemnable and has no place in society.</official-title></form><preamble><whereas><text>Whereas Jews across the United States have been threatened, cursed at, spit on, burned, and physically attacked in at least 193 antisemitic acts of violence during the first week of the 2021 conflict between Israel and Palestinians;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas pro-Palestinian protestors threatened, shoved, and threw fireworks at bystanders in the Diamond District of Midtown Manhattan, an area with many Jewish-owned businesses;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas pro-Palestinian protestors punched, threw objects, and directed antisemitic slurs at a group of Jewish men eating at a restaurant in Los Angeles;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas convoys of trucks bearing Palestinian flags drove through London shouting through loudspeakers: <quote>F__ the Jews</quote>, <quote>F__ their mothers</quote>, <quote>F__ their daughters</quote>, and <quote>Rape their daughters</quote>;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas an elderly Jewish man was beaten with sticks by a mob at a pro-Palestinian protest in Toronto;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas a Member of Congress called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu an <quote>ethno-nationalist</quote> on the floor of the House of Representatives and in a tweet accused the Israeli military of committing war crimes;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, after the announcement of a ceasefire in Israel, a Member of Congress tweeted, <quote>The Israeli military’s occupation continues. The blockade continues. The ethnic cleansing continues.</quote>;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas a Member of Congress described Israel in a tweet as an <quote>apartheid state</quote>; and</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas a Member of Congress tweeted that the Israeli military response to Palestinian terrorist attacks was killing <quote>babies, children and their parents</quote> and that Palestinians are <quote>being massacred</quote>: Now, therefore, be it</text></whereas></preamble><resolution-body><section id="S1" display-inline="yes-display-inline" section-type="undesignated-section"><text>That the Senate—</text><paragraph id="id89d5f80d59b641deb8fb813dd61a24b5"><enum>(1)</enum><text>condemns hatred and violence against Jews;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id1bc639445dd94630b694c3f31208a202"><enum>(2)</enum><text>denounces the poisonous anti-Israel rhetoric of elected officials that has inflamed hatred and inspired escalating violence against Jews;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id1a085620f6e644ebba520c1875a1c578"><enum>(3)</enum><text>rejects the biased, incomplete, and inaccurate information promulgated by the news media in the United States about Israel and the Government of Israel’s efforts to protect its citizens from terrorism;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id0eb63ba66d5a4de6a1dcc9c6ee063ea5"><enum>(4)</enum><text>celebrates the innumerable contributions of American Jews to our Nation, culture, values, and way of life; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id942a36f08c9141b4a65ca236ef24f619"><enum>(5)</enum><text>reaffirms its intent to ensure that Jews in the United States—</text><subparagraph id="id4B0812EFFE054EAB96826FC3387FDEF2"><enum>(A)</enum><text>are treated with dignity and respect; and </text></subparagraph><subparagraph id="id5F7C46B530F5430BAB0805630CC8330B"><enum>(B)</enum><text>receive the full protection of the law owed to them as citizens of the United States. </text></subparagraph></paragraph></section></resolution-body></resolution>
