which was considered and agreed to</action-desc></action><legis-type>RESOLUTION</legis-type><official-title display="yes">Expressing the sense of the Senate that, during Public Service Recognition Week, public servants should be commended for their dedication and continued service to the United States.</official-title></form><preamble><whereas><text>Whereas the week of May 2 through May 8, 2021, has been designated as <quote>Public Service Recognition Week</quote> to honor employees of the Federal Government and State and local governments and members of the uniformed services;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas millions of public servants have worked and continue to work to help the United States overcome the challenges from the COVID–19 pandemic, allowing essential services to continue and playing a critical role in protecting public health and safety; </text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas Public Service Recognition Week provides an opportunity to recognize and promote the important contributions of public servants and to honor the diverse men and women who meet the needs of the United States through work at all levels of government and as members of the uniformed services;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas millions of individuals work in government service and as members of the uniformed services, in every State, county, and city across the United States and in hundreds of cities abroad;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas public service is a noble calling involving a variety of challenging and rewarding professions;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the ability of the Federal Government and State and local governments to be responsive, innovative, and effective depends on the outstanding performance of dedicated public servants;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the United States continues to reaffirm the critical importance of public service employees in responding to public health and economic challenges;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the United States is a great and prosperous country, and public service employees contribute significantly to that greatness and prosperity;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the United States benefits daily from the knowledge and skills of the highly trained individuals who work in public service;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas public servants—</text><paragraph id="id34daa54c9116443a82fd852624d5e66f"><enum>(1)</enum><text>fight disease, including COVID–19, and promote better health;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="ide42878d118c148549fbe4e88925536fc"><enum>(2)</enum><text>promote economic stability and growth;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id3971b2fe141140f7bec84ab9d0f58bd2"><enum>(3)</enum><text>defend the freedom of the people of the United States and advance the interests of the United States around the world;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="ided2089ad26d04d7e92c6ef25cd3ff833"><enum>(4)</enum><text>provide vital strategic support functions to the Armed Forces and serve in the reserve components of the Armed Forces;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id56cfb9a68aef4679b8f280a64a3cd2fb"><enum>(5)</enum><text>fight crime and fires;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="ida5a5ea90bca94b27ba65c5d08028d4c9"><enum>(6)</enum><text>ensure equal access to secure, efficient, and affordable mail service;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id9875c804cac74109b840f3dbb0c7bc5d"><enum>(7)</enum><text>deliver benefits under the Social Security Act (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/42/301">42 U.S.C. 301</external-xref> et seq.), including benefits under the Medicare program under title XVIII of that Act (<external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/42/1395">42 U.S.C. 1395</external-xref> et seq.);</text></paragraph><paragraph id="iddbbcdc8d9d4842239ae4aa303a466dfe"><enum>(8)</enum><text>protect the environment and parks in the United States;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id2e73b39ece154596aff8035b8d6f2aa5"><enum>(9)</enum><text>enforce laws guaranteeing equal employment opportunity and healthy working conditions;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id694bb820ef2c46939d9293136e418732"><enum>(10)</enum><text>defend and secure critical infrastructure;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id42f455b9fb7c4f3ca350ebe3576a6eea"><enum>(11)</enum><text>help the people of the United States respond to and recover from natural disasters, pandemics, and terrorist attacks;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="idc7282d2620644991a8292d7b48b2d737"><enum>(12)</enum><text>teach and work in schools and libraries;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="idba22014c7341441e9ba3a9dbf426c3b6"><enum>(13)</enum><text>develop new technologies and explore the Earth, the Moon, and space to improve our knowledge on how the world changes;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="idc16c0be53a1e4920bbe8284acfb3eafc"><enum>(14)</enum><text>improve and secure transportation systems; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id2b7bc7a2ecef4148a3241ba03b986849"><enum>(15)</enum><text>assist veterans of the Armed Forces;</text></paragraph></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas members of the uniformed services and civilian employees at all levels of government—</text><paragraph id="id667c349e72114e26aa203a4aa4569a1a"><enum>(1)</enum><text>make significant contributions to the general welfare of the United States; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="idd93fd7e6ea934c33aacf115643765b0d"><enum>(2)</enum><text>are on the front lines in the fight to defeat terrorism and other threats to the security of the United States, and maintain homeland security;</text></paragraph></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas public servants work in a professional manner to build relationships with other countries and cultures in order to better represent the interests and promote the ideals of the United States;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas public servants alert Congress and the public to government waste, fraud, and abuse, and dangers to public health;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the individuals serving in the uniformed services, as well as the skilled trade and craft employees of the Federal Government who provide support to their efforts—</text><paragraph id="id89fcb22ef79544c4b48d19fa101a1b13"><enum>(1)</enum><text>are committed to doing their jobs regardless of the circumstances; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id7e6534c8d17d484b8f05e97de8ce0a8f"><enum>(2)</enum><text>contribute greatly to the security of the United States and the world;</text></paragraph></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas public servants have bravely fought in armed conflicts in the defense of the United States and its ideals and deserve the care and benefits they have earned through their honorable service;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas public servants—</text><paragraph id="ide31f50ec699643f599995454aa37e1c6"><enum>(1)</enum><text>have much to offer, as demonstrated by their expertise and innovative ideas; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id805ff29ac09944ebad515e652c1067ff"><enum>(2)</enum><text>serve as examples by passing on institutional knowledge to train the next generation of public servants; and </text></paragraph></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the week of May 2 through May 8, 2021, marks the 37th anniversary of Public Service Recognition Week: Now, therefore, be it </text></whereas></preamble><resolution-body><section display-inline="yes-display-inline" section-type="undesignated-section" id="S1"><text>That the Senate—</text><paragraph id="idbff5edfa17b7482d99189c99e58ba3e7"><enum>(1)</enum><text>supports the designation of the week of May 2 through May 8, 2021, as <quote>Public Service Recognition Week</quote>;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id02d5f6b5697147d6a96f50801c254af1"><enum>(2)</enum><text>commends public servants for their outstanding contributions to the United States during Public Service Recognition Week and throughout the year, especially during the ongoing COVID–19 crisis;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id00eacbfb58c44e7394e59cdb8c1098be"><enum>(3)</enum><text>salutes government employees and members of the uniformed services for their unyielding dedication to, and enthusiasm for, public service;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id11f70cb6d4b54356b52fb487b6b50ffe"><enum>(4)</enum><text>honors government employees and members of the uniformed services who have given their lives and health in service to their communities, States, Tribes, and the United States;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="idb3c04e44afe44fa1bb6610472bd595de"><enum>(5)</enum><text>calls upon a new generation to consider a career in public service as an honorable profession;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id973898113a054ff5b6677f257bdf5b67"><enum>(6)</enum><text>encourages efforts to promote public service careers at every level of government; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="idfa945a61047e4e86af766a9c63394062"><enum>(7)</enum><text>supports efforts to promote an efficient and effective public service that serves the people of the United States. </text></paragraph></section></resolution-body></resolution>
