which was referred to the <committee-name committee-id="SSJU00">Committee on the Judiciary</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>RESOLUTION</legis-type><official-title display="yes">Designating April 2021 as <quote>Parkinson’s Awareness Month</quote>.</official-title></form><preamble><whereas><text>Whereas Parkinson’s disease is a chronic, progressive neurological disease and the second most common neuro­de­gen­er­a­tive disease in the United States;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, although there is inadequate data on the incidence and prevalence of Parkinson’s disease, the disease is estimated to affect between 500,000 and 1,000,000 individuals in the United States, with that number expected to more than double by 2040;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Parkinson’s disease is the 15th leading cause of death in the United States;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas millions of individuals in the United States are greatly impacted by Parkinson’s disease, including the caregivers, family members, and friends of individuals living with Parkinson’s disease;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas research suggests that the cause of Parkinson’s disease is a combination of genetic and environmental factors, but the exact cause of the disease in most individuals is still unknown;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, as of March 2021, there is no objective test or biomarker with which to diagnose Parkinson’s disease;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas there is no known cure or drug to slow or halt the progression of Parkinson’s disease, and available treatments are limited in their ability to address the medical needs of patients and remain effective over time;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease vary from person to person and may include—</text><paragraph id="id880B02D5CA0D49BE864E17B756263B3A"><enum>(1)</enum><text>tremors;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="idAFC2DCA8F013422FB603D7D71EC541D3"><enum>(2)</enum><text>slowness of movement and rigidity;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="idF8136CFA92D14D008C788BEC1618F8CC"><enum>(3)</enum><text>problems with gait and balance;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id963A176275014E7CA7E3A7EE85B2DB41"><enum>(4)</enum><text>disturbances in speech and swallowing;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id0BD631741EC345069B644CB393E27B49"><enum>(5)</enum><text>cognitive impairment and dementia;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="idD871F64B1E014892914C8ED7192D165A"><enum>(6)</enum><text>mood disorders; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id20CECE126A6B41559594B821E267C841"><enum>(7)</enum><text>a variety of other nonmotor symptoms;</text></paragraph></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas volunteers, researchers, caregivers, and medical professionals are working to improve the quality of life of—</text><paragraph id="id6B02EAA7A712460DAC0473BFF95E39C1"><enum>(1)</enum><text>individuals living with Parkinson’s disease; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id0E7695C119514814AF1BDCD7EFA516E9"><enum>(2)</enum><text>the families of those individuals; and</text></paragraph></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas increased research, education, and community support services are needed—</text><paragraph id="id50A749C022834F66BDB6A251356473E9"><enum>(1)</enum><text>to find more effective treatments; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id2188984C16C74916AA4C220E60F6B734"><enum>(2)</enum><text>to provide access to quality care to individuals living with Parkinson’s disease: Now, therefore, be it</text></paragraph></whereas></preamble><resolution-body><section display-inline="yes-display-inline" section-type="undesignated-section" id="S1"><text>That the Senate—</text><paragraph id="id00AE9F03374D448E971610C0FC2ACB0A"><enum>(1)</enum><text>designates April 2021 as <quote>Parkinson’s Awareness Month</quote>;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id704EAF8225824BCDBA31EB9EE56FCCDD"><enum>(2)</enum><text>supports the goals and ideals of Parkinson’s Awareness Month;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id8491B11DE9FC4320850C81F25F977053"><enum>(3)</enum><text>continues to support research to find better treatments and a cure for Parkinson’s disease;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id6C12A383DEC34BB3B0104F93A5CEE22C"><enum>(4)</enum><text>recognizes the individuals living with Parkinson’s disease who participate in vital clinical trials to advance the knowledge of the disease; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id0DCAFBB334FC4D0CB737F7A621255ECF"><enum>(5)</enum><text>commends the dedication of the organizations, volunteers, researchers, and millions of individuals across the United States who are working to improve the quality of life of—</text><subparagraph id="id7AF818D7F64D4B909079696F232D8521"><enum>(A)</enum><text>individuals living with Parkinson’s disease; and</text></subparagraph><subparagraph id="id0C08B75910FD4FF6B1DE7D3BB9D5BD3E"><enum>(B)</enum><text>the families of those individuals.</text></subparagraph></paragraph></section></resolution-body></resolution>
