RES. 39</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES</current-chamber><action display="yes"><action-date date="20220512">May 12, 2022</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="S353">Mr. Schatz</sponsor> (for himself and <cosponsor name-id="S229">Mrs. Murray</cosponsor>) submitted the following concurrent resolution; which was referred to the <committee-name committee-id="SSJU00">Committee on the Judiciary</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>CONCURRENT RESOLUTION</legis-type><official-title display="yes">Honoring the 1,000,000 individuals who have died from COVID–19 in the United States.</official-title></form><preamble><whereas><text>Whereas, on May 12, 2022, the United States reached 1,000,000 confirmed lives lost due to COVID–19;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the first laboratory-confirmed case of COVID–19 in the United States was recorded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on January 20, 2020;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the first known death from COVID–19 in the United States occurred in February 2020;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas, in the months following the first recorded death, the COVID–19 pandemic has impacted individuals, families, and communities across the United States;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas estimates report that the death toll from COVID–19 has increased the number of orphans in the United States by nearly 200,000 children;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas scientific breakthroughs have been effective at reducing the COVID–19 death toll; and</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas it is recognized that mitigation efforts can reduce the number of deaths due to COVID–19 and save lives: Now, therefore, be it </text></whereas></preamble><resolution-body><section display-inline="yes-display-inline" section-type="undesignated-section" id="S1"><text>That Congress—</text><paragraph id="id2a255534f76c4b5f94d57ffad914cb40"><enum>(1)</enum><text>recognizes and mourns the 1,000,000 known lives lost in the United States due to COVID–19; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id0e5effd7402a4c668079ee603364ba07"><enum>(2)</enum><text>honors the memory of the deceased and offers condolences to their families and loved ones.</text></paragraph></section></resolution-body></resolution>
