<distribution-code display="yes">II</distribution-code><congress>117th CONGRESS</congress><session>1st Session</session><legis-num>S. 575</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES</current-chamber><action><action-date>March 3, 2021</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="S348">Mr. Paul</sponsor> introduced the following bill; which was read twice and referred to the <committee-name committee-id="SSJU00">Committee on the Judiciary</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>A BILL</legis-type><official-title>To provide Federal criminal penalties for lynching. </official-title></form><legis-body display-enacting-clause="yes-display-enacting-clause"><section section-type="section-one" id="id2BC125051C7548A597937B5BB151A103"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Marie Thompson Antilynching Act</short-title></quote>.</text></section><section section-type="subsequent-section" id="idF7A3CC1745244FC495B5BE1D0EE2F804"><enum>2.</enum><header>Lynching</header><subsection id="id34790336A16040AE85CFAAB98F87AAF7"><enum>(a)</enum><header>Offense</header><text><external-xref legal-doc="usc-chapter" parsable-cite="usc-chapter/18/13">Chapter 13</external-xref> of title 18, United States Code, is amended by adding at the end the following:</text><quoted-block style="USC" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="id0E732ED70C814A00AB87055E2B89B310"><section id="id633F9C84A10E417DB14D799B6CAF6880"><enum>250.</enum><header>Lynching</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">Whoever conspires with another person to violate section 249 and willfully causes or attempts to cause serious bodily injury (as defined in section 1365(h)) shall be punished in the same manner as a completed violation of such section, except that if the maximum term of imprisonment for such completed violation is less than 10 years, the person may be imprisoned for not more than 10 years. </text></section><after-quoted-block>.</after-quoted-block></quoted-block></subsection><subsection id="id623867A05C194DE0B5C6AA57FB20B9E4"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Table of sections amendment</header><text>The table of sections for <external-xref legal-doc="usc-chapter" parsable-cite="usc-chapter/18/13">chapter 13</external-xref> of title 18, United States Code, is amended by inserting after the item relating to <external-xref legal-doc="usc" parsable-cite="usc/18/249">section 249</external-xref> the following:</text><quoted-block style="USC" id="id30168f81-0e5d-4fbe-a641-60327e21202e"><toc><toc-entry level="section" idref="id633F9C84A10E417DB14D799B6CAF6880">250.
