<distribution-code display="yes">II</distribution-code><congress>117th CONGRESS</congress><session>2d Session</session><legis-num>S. 4843</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES</current-chamber><action><action-date date="20220913">September 13, 2022</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="S355">Mr. Cruz</sponsor> (for himself, <cosponsor name-id="S374">Mr. Cotton</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S350">Mr. Rubio</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S396">Mrs. Blackburn</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S391">Mr. Young</cosponsor>, and <cosponsor name-id="S404">Mr. Scott of Florida</cosponsor>) introduced the following bill; which was read twice and referred to the <committee-name committee-id="SSFR00">Committee on Foreign Relations</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>A BILL</legis-type><official-title>To permit visiting dignitaries and service members from Taiwan to display the flag of the Republic of China.</official-title></form><legis-body display-enacting-clause="yes-display-enacting-clause"><section section-type="section-one" id="S1"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Taiwan Symbols of Sovereignty (SOS) Act of 2022</short-title></quote>.</text></section><section id="idDA2C7D5B26444A0BB43F0F80965B2533"><enum>2.</enum><header>Requirement to permit dignitaries and service members from Taiwan to display the flag of the Republic of China</header><subsection id="idE9BECE38509047A8BDD1F4B4892B67EF"><enum>(a)</enum><header>In general</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">The Secretary of State and the Secretary of Defense shall permit members of the Armed Forces and Government representatives from the Republic of China (Taiwan) or the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office (TECRO) to display, for the official purposes set forth in subsection (b), symbols of Republic of China sovereignty, including—</text><paragraph id="idf188cc43171e4171a39f2577d0248f5e"><enum>(1)</enum><text>the flag of the Republic of China (Taiwan); and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="idb6ad25a5e85245d1a373240f560b74fb"><enum>(2)</enum><text>the corresponding emblems or insignia of military units.</text></paragraph></subsection><subsection id="idD374FDAF683E44D68EC086084CB01420"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Official purposes</header><text>The official purposes referred to in subsection (a) are—</text><paragraph id="id210450519f344a8fac15f334dac6f5a4"><enum>(1)</enum><text>the wearing of official uniforms;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id0ca8376920af46a7a73a0615175f6315"><enum>(2)</enum><text>conducting government hosted ceremonies or functions; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id687300ea3c574eb29eeb45c9c23b18dc"><enum>(3)</enum><text>appearances on Department of State and Department of Defense social media accounts promoting engagements with Taiwan.</text></paragraph></subsection></section></legis-body></bill>
