<distribution-code display="yes">II</distribution-code><congress>117th CONGRESS</congress><session>2d Session</session><legis-num>S. 3734</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES</current-chamber><action><action-date date="20220302">March 2, 2022</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="S366">Ms. Warren</sponsor> (for herself, <cosponsor name-id="S247">Mr. Wyden</cosponsor>, <cosponsor name-id="S406">Mr. Kelly</cosponsor>, and <cosponsor name-id="S402">Ms. Rosen</cosponsor>) introduced the following bill; which was read twice and referred to the <committee-name committee-id="SSJU00">Committee on the Judiciary</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>A BILL</legis-type><official-title>To amend title 5, United States Code, to designate Gold Star Families Day as a legal public holiday, and for other purposes.</official-title></form><legis-body><section id="S1" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Gold Star Families Day Act</short-title></quote>.</text></section><section id="id4332A33D045240188A17B7A6C620D480"><enum>2.</enum><header>Findings</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">Congress finds the following:</text><paragraph id="id7BDEF0C1BC104B7BAB312954A6A5FAE2"><enum>(1)</enum><text>The term <quote>Gold Star family</quote>—</text><subparagraph id="idAC24B2C6180E42F3BFF5F40410BC1C8E"><enum>(A)</enum><text>refers to the immediate family of a servicemember who dies—</text><clause id="id7384D41D5184445CA74C1B468840D8B5"><enum>(i)</enum><text>while serving in the Armed Forces; or</text></clause><clause id="idC9F5589CBD3E42DA9B940E8D3B8B20AB"><enum>(ii)</enum><text>from a service-connected injury or illness; and</text></clause></subparagraph><subparagraph id="id907218EB7ABF425A9080BCB35E58EB97"><enum>(B)</enum><text>originated from the service flags first flown by families during World War I.</text></subparagraph></paragraph><paragraph id="idDBBC205A935547B0AB48392D8CEE2A18"><enum>(2)</enum><text>The flags described in paragraph (1)(B) included a blue star for each immediate family member serving in the Armed Forces during any period of war or hostilities in which the Armed Forces were engaged. If a loved one represented by such a blue star died, the blue star was replaced by a gold star, which allowed members of the community to know the price that the family had paid in the cause of defending freedom.</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id5DC52BD4C47D474AB7495B1C4843DDF4"><enum>(3)</enum><text>There are Gold Star families from World War I and many thousands from World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and Operations Desert Shield, Desert Storm, Iraqi Freedom, and Enduring Freedom.</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id12EB27DC92CA445CBD63A3BE66F24547"><enum>(4)</enum><text>The United States recognizes the sacrifice that all Gold Star family members make when a father, mother, brother, sister, son, daughter, or other loved one dies in service to the United States.</text></paragraph></section><section id="id40F87BD92E6A4661BBB0AA2228199399"><enum>3.</enum><header>Gold Star Families Day as a legal public holiday</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">Section 6103(a) of title 5, United States Code, is amended by inserting after the item relating to Labor Day the following:</text><quoted-block id="idC2A28D6A85BB4150A415A0263D41A5C3" style="OLC" act-name=""><paragraph id="idE7773D44EF7945D0B6C3706193A09312"><enum/><text>Gold Star Families Day, the last Monday in September.</text></paragraph><after-quoted-block>.</after-quoted-block></quoted-block></section></legis-body></bill>
