<distribution-code display="yes">II</distribution-code><congress>117th CONGRESS</congress><session>2d Session</session><legis-num>S. 3483</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES</current-chamber><action><action-date date="20220112" legis-day="20220110">January 12 (legislative day, January 10), 2022</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="S337">Mr. Coons</sponsor> introduced the following bill; which was read twice and referred to the <committee-name committee-id="SSVA00">Committee on Veterans' Affairs</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>A BILL</legis-type><official-title>To amend title 38, United States Code, to extend increased dependency and indemnity compensation paid to surviving spouses of veterans who die from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, regardless of how long the veterans had such disease prior to death, and for other purposes.</official-title></form><legis-body style="OLC" display-enacting-clause="yes-display-enacting-clause" id="H2A871AC6694C4F758EDBDCB8508378D8"><section section-type="section-one" id="H65CFB8A8EB054071B7871581C8BD3676"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Justice for ALS Veterans Act of 2022</short-title></quote>.</text></section><section section-type="subsequent-section" id="H4900E047590645C2BF4C31770AAD5893"><enum>2.</enum><header>Extension of increased dependency and indemnity compensation to surviving spouses of veterans who die from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis</header><subsection id="H97169ED0AEAA4926B30B91EC219054C0"><enum>(a)</enum><header>Extension</header><text>Section 1311(a)(2) of title 38, United States Code, is amended—</text><paragraph id="H0B2695263B1948B1A3B8FD0C18FE6634"><enum>(1)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">by inserting <quote><header-in-text level="subparagraph" style="USC"><enum-in-header>(A)</enum-in-header></header-in-text></quote> before <quote>The rate</quote>; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="HC7DF2ED0C35F41D580968197ED0F0507"><enum>(2)</enum><text>by adding at the end the following new subparagraph:</text><quoted-block style="USC" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="H31AE40C56935496DAE55D02CEFD5B8C3"><subparagraph id="HE4D213980E75499B8A9C640C71779DB6" indent="up2"><enum>(B)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">A veteran whom the Secretary determines died from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis shall be treated as a veteran described in subparagraph (A) without regard for how long the veteran had such disease prior to death.</text></subparagraph><after-quoted-block>.</after-quoted-block></quoted-block></paragraph></subsection><subsection commented="no" id="HDDFCD1DB2C924495AC7309CCE591597D"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Applicability</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">Subparagraph (B) of section 1311(a)(2) of title 38, United States Code, as added by subsection (a), shall apply to a veteran who dies from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis on or after October 1, 2021.</text></subsection></section></legis-body></bill>
