which was read twice and referred to the <committee-name committee-id="SSAS00">Committee on Armed Services</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>A BILL</legis-type><official-title>To require the Comptroller General of the United States to assess the quality and nutrition of food available at military installations for members of the Armed Forces.</official-title></form><legis-body><section id="id3E9D867F601944328478D6A8E8A94886" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the <quote><short-title>Military Nutrition Improvement Act</short-title></quote>.</text></section><section id="id209846c2a5cc4be89d882450cf7db81c"><enum>2.</enum><header>Comptroller General assessment of quality and nutrition of food available at military installations for members of the Armed Forces</header><subsection id="idcbf5d328e4d444e89eb71c7644ef83a8"><enum>(a)</enum><header>Assessment</header><text>The Comptroller General of the United States shall conduct an assessment of the quality and nutrition of food available at military installations for members of the Armed Forces.</text></subsection><subsection id="ida4faa818cd124dcfb82f2794bad32215"><enum>(b)</enum><header>Elements</header><text>The assessment required by subsection (a) shall include the following: </text><paragraph id="idf3c5a7b601ed455ba1e28e1c022a49b1"><enum>(1)</enum><text>A description of the extent to which data is being collected on the nutritional food options available at military installations for members of the Armed Forces, including the fat, sodium, and fiber content of hot line foods.</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id2a1e0095e08744cf94ddc5557eda5205"><enum>(2)</enum><text>An assessment of the extent to which the Department of Defense has evaluated whether the nutritional food options described in paragraph (1) meet or exceed the daily nutrition standards for adults set forth by the Department of Agriculture. </text></paragraph><paragraph id="idf06811a8f604471a887db6630b968654"><enum>(3)</enum><text>A description of how the Secretary integrates and coordinates nutrition recommendations, policies, and pertinent information through the Interagency Committee on Human Nutrition Research.</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id340e2d6d777b41d1b82224354413462b"><enum>(4)</enum><text>An assessment of the extent to which the Department of Defense has evaluated how such recommendations, policies, and information affect health outcomes of members of the Armed Forces or retention rates for those members who do not meet physical standards set forth by the Department.</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id3362b976299240ff9e524590a3ccc133"><enum>(5)</enum><text>A description of how the Secretary gathers input on the quality of food service options provided to members of the Armed Forces.</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id198960bf2f2248aabfbfa2f7d23ebbcc"><enum>(6)</enum><text>An assessment of how the Department of Defense tracks the attitudes and perceptions of members of the Armed Forces on the quality of food service operations at military installations in terms of availability during irregular hours, accessibility, portion, price, and quality.</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id0dfa67a4edc14ab99121aca7f27a0411"><enum>(7)</enum><text>An assessment of access by members of the Armed Forces to high-quality food options on military installations, such as availability of food outside typical meal times or options for members not located in close proximity to dining facilities at a military installation.</text></paragraph><paragraph id="idd1393ac7d1e74c6b9c242a1c94be2d45" commented="no" display-inline="no-display-inline"><enum>(8)</enum><text>Such recommendations as the Comptroller General may have to address any findings related to the quality and availability of food options provided to members of the Armed Forces by the Department of Defense. </text></paragraph></subsection><subsection id="id3FCD54DA73654650BB36AF55940FD9F9"><enum>(c)</enum><header>Briefing and report</header><paragraph id="id466A485163064F7E8C5F73131AB83145"><enum>(1)</enum><header>Briefing</header><text>Not later than 180 days after the date of the enactment of this Act, the Comptroller General shall brief the Committees on Armed Services of the Senate and the House of Representatives on the status of the assessment conducted under subsection (a).</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id02E5DB1C822D47B481315A11730110B7"><enum>(2)</enum><header>Report</header><text>Not later than one year after the briefing under paragraph (1), the Comptroller General shall submit to the Committees on Armed Services of the Senate and the House of Representatives a report on the assessment conducted under subsection (a).</text></paragraph></subsection></section></legis-body></bill>
