<distribution-code display="yes">II</distribution-code><congress>117th CONGRESS</congress><session>1st Session</session><legis-num>S. 1648</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES</current-chamber><action><action-date date="20210513">May 13, 2021</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="S346">Mr. Lee</sponsor> introduced the following bill; which was read twice and referred to the <committee-name committee-id="SSAS00">Committee on Armed Services</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>A BILL</legis-type><official-title>To amend title 10, United States Code, to authorize the construction of naval vessels in shipyards in North Atlantic Treaty Organization countries.</official-title></form><legis-body display-enacting-clause="yes-display-enacting-clause"><section section-type="section-one" id="idC86EE04910534E1D8B8E4B0CD3A2C013"><enum>1.</enum><header>Construction of naval vessels in shipyards in North Atlantic Treaty Organization countries</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">Section 8679 of title 10, United States Code, is amended—</text><paragraph id="idC8814950FD3D4D58A0C59468A95190B3"><enum>(1)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">in subsection (a), by striking <quote>subsection (b)</quote> and inserting <quote>subsections (b) and (c)</quote>; </text></paragraph><paragraph id="id7B127641F78F4B498EF9A611C8C2CBB1"><enum>(2)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">by redesignating subsection (c) as subsection (d); and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id747544D0EFA14C0B9ECDB81E786A5462"><enum>(3)</enum><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">by inserting after subsection (b) the following new subsection (c):</text><quoted-block style="OLC" display-inline="no-display-inline" id="id443CAD8E73EC48F5B49124CBD3BA9813"><subsection id="idae6a268676c449a3a5430ec148a8047d"><enum>(c)</enum><header>Construction of naval vessels in shipyards in NATO countries</header><text>The Secretary of the Navy may construct a naval vessel in a foreign shipyard if—</text><paragraph id="iddab7e5218cb144c4916298164d6a9bc6"><enum>(1)</enum><text>the shipyard is located within the boundaries of a member country of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="id3a9e929b07e3406ba1bf725fb56e20b0"><enum>(2)</enum><text>the cost of construction of such vessel in such shipyard will be less than the cost of construction of such vessel in a domestic shipyard.</text></paragraph></subsection><after-quoted-block>.</after-quoted-block></quoted-block></paragraph></section></legis-body></bill>
