RES. 967</legis-num><current-chamber>IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES</current-chamber><action display="yes"><action-date date="20220307">March 7, 2022</action-date><action-desc><sponsor name-id="W000822">Mrs. Watson Coleman</sponsor> (for herself and <cosponsor name-id="S001215">Ms. Stevens</cosponsor>) submitted the following resolution; which was referred to the <committee-name committee-id="HIF00">Committee on Energy and Commerce</committee-name></action-desc></action><legis-type>RESOLUTION</legis-type><official-title display="yes">Raising awareness of the impact of COVID–19 on bereaved children.</official-title></form><preamble><whereas><text>Whereas COVID–19 has taken the lives of more than 950,000 people in the United States, leading to more than 200,000 children experiencing caregiver loss;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas 1 in every 360 children under 18 have lost a coresiding caregiver to COVID–19, and 70 percent of caregiver loss affects children 13 and younger;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas 65 percent of caregiver loss to COVID–19 is experienced by children of color;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas an estimated 4,400,000 children will experience the loss of a parent before the age of 18 in the United States;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas child bereavement disproportionately impacts minority communities;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas children losing primary caregivers have a higher risk of experiencing substance abuse and mental health problems, including anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas bereaved children are at higher risk of reduced employment and housing instability, and experience lower rates of academic attainment and higher dropout rates;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas parental bereavement is associated with a higher likelihood of risky behaviors that threaten the health and safety of bereaved children;</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the impacts of caregiver loss on children are amplified during COVID–19 due to a lack of stable social support systems commonly provided with consistent school or community; and</text></whereas><whereas><text>Whereas the long-term consequences of caregiver loss during the COVID–19 pandemic are still unknown: Now, therefore, be it</text></whereas></preamble><resolution-body style="traditional" id="HA7B99D6953EA46E590163CB209C9C76F"><section display-inline="yes-display-inline" section-type="undesignated-section" id="HDD72F940D4B14FE5A54F5A66BE8553E7"><enum/><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">That the House of Representatives—</text><paragraph id="H69EE0FCC51374D9E8A13405E87103C28"><enum>(1)</enum><text>recognizes the impact of COVID–19 on bereaved children and the unknown long-term consequences of caregiver loss during the COVID–19 pandemic;</text></paragraph><paragraph id="HFD417A257F88446AA8355AF4E48B75A7"><enum>(2)</enum><text>acknowledges that the loss of a primary caregiver disproportionately affects racial and ethnic minorities; and</text></paragraph><paragraph id="H260E4D1349FF44A7B3159E5AF0170BBC"><enum>(3)</enum><text>calls upon the Federal Government to prioritize the needs of bereaved children through identifying services and resources that can be used to assist them.</text></paragraph></section></resolution-body></resolution>
